In SEC Men’s Basketball, Kentucky always rules

Throughout its history, SEC basketball has really been about one team: the Kentucky Wildcats. If you don’t quite understand the above video, you probably have not watched a lot of Kentucky basketball (fans hold a sign of the number 3 everytime they make a 3-point shot… I.E. so they make a lot of 3′s). Wildcat Men’s Basketball has had a dominant presence in a portion of every decade since the SEC’s inception in 1932. Only one coach that coached multiple seasons at UK finished with an overall losing record in his tenure: W.W.H. Mustaine, UK’s first ever men’s basketball coach. And no coach, after Kentucky’s first joined the original SEC, has left the university with an overall losing record.

There is no doubt the standard of excellence is high at basketball university USA.  Perhaps, where Kentucky has shined most has been in the tournaments. Kentucky has won over half of SEC tournaments in history (27 of 52), owns 7 total NCAA tournaments Titles (Second most to UCLA in history),  the most appearances (51) and wins (105, currently tied with North Carolina) in NCAA tournament history. If those stats were too much for you, then know UK also owns 2 NIT Titles in its history too (the only school with multiple NCAA and NIT tournament Titles). It’s no wonder Rupp Arena in Lexington, where the Wildcats play, is the biggest basketball arena in the nation, and regularly leads college basketball in attendance. More often than not considered the Yankees of basketball, fans annually expect a Sweet 16 and Final Four appearances from their Wildcat basketball squad. This year’s crop talent, despite their youth, is not letting expectations fan expectations down. Considered by many the best team in the nation, and tied with the Syracuse Orange for the best record in the NCAA so far this year, the Wildcats are a virtual lock for one of the four tournament #1 seeds. Barring an early exit in this year’s SEC tournament, they are in best spot to grab the overall #1 seed of the tournament’s field of 68. Read More >>

Not Enough For Urban

As Florida senior strong safety Ahmad Black loped down the west sideline in front of the Penn State bench with the football in his right hand, his head coach wondered if he would draw a celebration penalty before reaching the end zone.

“I was going to hit him right square in the mouth if he got a 15-yard penalty for holding the ball up,” Florida College coach Urban Meyer joked.

High above in a Raymond James Stadium suite, Will Muschamp, Meyer’s replacement starting Sunday, looked on in approval. Back down on the field, Penn State coach Joe Paterno watched helplessly as Black raced by, denying Paterno his 25th bowl win and 402nd victory.

On the Florida sideline, Ian Lockwood, wearing an orange skull cap to cover the scars from his most recent — and second — surgery to try and remove the cancer that is eating his brain, cheered as Black reached Penn State’s 30, changing the football from his right hand to his left hand.

Black kept striding, pointing with his free hand to the Gators’ faithful in the north end zone. Upon finally reaching the end zone to cap off his 80-yard interception return and cap off Florida’s 37-24 Outback Bowl victory against Penn State, Black simply dropped the ball to the ground.

Before Saturday’s final game at Florida for Black — and Meyer — Black gave Meyer a different version of what would happen in this scenario.

Just Say No

Did you hear the predictable this week? Soon after Urban Meyer was asked by ESPN about his second retirement from Florida’s College football program in less than a year, he said of a possible return to coaching someday, “No, that’s not going to happen.”

Uh-huh.

Then he added faster than it takes hands to close during one of those Gator Chomps, “Certainly not right away.”

He’s coming back, and contrary to what he says, it will be “right away,” and that’s not good — not for the school that will be foolish enough to hire Meyer “right away” given his cries in recent months to have somebody save him from himself, and not for the family that he says he wishes to spend more time with, and not for himself.

So what should university presidents and athletics directors do to help Meyer in the near future? Well, as soon as they even think of acquiring the talented but tormented coach, they should apply the old Nancy Reagan approach for drugs to Meyer, and just say no.

That said, the odds of the 46-year-old Meyer becoming another Al McGuire or John Madden range between slim and none.

Trey Burton is University of Florida's Rising StarNot many players are mentioned in the same breath as Tim Tebow. is now the exception.

Trey Burton, a true freshman, set a University of Florida record by scoring six touchdowns in the Gators’ 48-14 win over Kentucky Saturday night here at Florida Field. The previous record of five touchdowns was held by Tebow — UF’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback — and set in 2007 against South Carolina.

“He’s the best football player to ever play college football,” Burton said of Tebow. “It’s an honor to be in the same sentence as him.”

Burton is first SEC player to score six touchdowns in a game since Auburn’s Cadillac Williams in 2003. He also became the first FBS player with at least five rushing touchdowns and one touchdown reception in a single game since West Virginia’s Steve Slaton in 2005.

Burton, who has played quarterback, fullback, receiver, tight end and special teams this season, scored on all five of his rushes — 11 10, 9, 3 and 7 yards — playing quarterback in the wildcat formation (lining up in the shotgun). He also caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Brantley in the first quarter and added a 42-yard pass completion — the longest by the Gators this year — in the fourth quarter.
