Bigger and Better
Big East men’s basketball has twice as many teams as it football counterpart: 8 teams football to 16 teams basketball. And it’s been apparent since 1979 that having such a large conference, 3 more teams in basketball than any other NCAA Division I conference, hasn’t watered-down the talent level or competitiveness of the league. The conference’s proudest moment might’ve happened either in 1985, when 3 of the 4 Final Four team’s comprised itself of Big East teams (Villanova, Georgetown and St. John’s; the tournament winner going on to be Villanova) or last year, when 11 of the conference’s 16 teams went on to enter the NCAA Tournament comprising 16 percent of the tournament’s total field (Connecticut, Big East’s conference winner, also going on to win the 2011 championship game). Although not all of the Big East’s teams have done it while members of the conference, all of the Big East team’s, besides USF, have made an appearance in the Final Four at some point in their history’s.
For the last 30 years the spotlight of this mega-conference’s season-ending tournament has been played at basketball’s virtual mecca, Madison Square Garden, where 12 of the conference’s top 16 teams annually make the pilgrimage. This year the most highlighted team heading into the Garden will be #2 AP-ranked Syracuse. The Orangemen are one Notre Dame loss removed from a perfect season, and have been winning in the face of on-going former assistant coach Bernie Fine’s child abuse scandal, and a subsequent slander case against head coach Jim Boeheim, surrounding comments about the abused ball-boy children made soon after child abuse allegations first surfaced. Sixth Chance! What Kind of Precedent is This?
This is a nice story for this player but if they all did this, fans couldn’t get their favorite player’s jersey for a lot longer.
When Case Keenum’s phone rang Friday afternoon, he knew his College football future had been decided and he wasn’t sure which way it would go.
Keenum, Houston’s senior starting quarterback, suffered a torn ACL in the Cougars’ third game of the 2010 season and appealed to the NCAA for a sixth year, an appeal many didn’t think he’d win.
“I had a lot of people telling me I was going to get it and I wasn’t sure I was, I had no clear feeling one way or the other,” Keenum said. “Then coach Sumlin called and told me I got it. I was excited. I called my dad and he screamed like a little girl.”
Keenum will be back for a sixth year and likely will break the NCAA career passing record of 17,072 yards set by Hawaii’s Timmy Chang (2000-04). Keenum, Houston’s all-time leading passer, had 13,586 yards when he suffered the injury against UCLA on Sept. 18. He’s currently fifth all-time nationally. He also would need 27 touchdowns to tie Graham Harrell’s record of 134 set at Texas Tech from 2005-08.
Keenum led the nation in total offense in 2008 and 2009 and led the Cougars to an 18-9 record, a national ranking and the Conference USA title game. Under Keenum, the Cougars averaged 41.1 points and 563.1 yards per game, but last year, with two freshman quarterbacks, Houston averaged 37.7 points and 480.5 yards per game and missed a bowl for the first time since 2004.
“It’s not fun and I don’t wish that on anybody,” Keenum said. “I’ve been through a lot of things, but that’s just how it goes. I’ve said many times before that you’ve got your plans and God’s got his plans and it’s always better when you go with his plan. I believe it and I’m going to continue to live my life that way.”
Houston Quarterback Case Keenum’s Injury Due to Lack of Discipline
Before Saturday’s game against , Houston starting quarterback Case Keenum was explicitly told not to chase down defenders after an interception.
They were words Keenum should have heeded.
Houston Cougars coach Kevin Sumlin announced Sunday afternoon that Keenum, a senior, suffered a torn ACL after awkwardly twisting while chasing a defender after a pick. Keenum will miss the rest of the season and Sumlin said he doesn’t know whether the school will apply for a medical redshirt.
“We all know kind of competitor he is,” Sumlin said of Keenum, who suffered a concussion against UTEP last week after getting blocked while trying to chase a defender during an interception return. “This is a difficult time for he and his family. We talked for a while this morning before he went in for the evaluation and I just think he needs some time to just kind of sit back. We’ll know more after he’s evaluated again.” Read More >>
The Houston Cougars May be Without Their Quarterback
Houston is 2-0 and ranked for the second consecutive season, but the Cougars might have to continue without one of their key players.
Quarterback Case Keenum suffered a concussion during last week’s 54-24 victory over UTEP while trying to make a tackle after an interception. Coach Kevin Sumlin issued a statement about the injury, but declined to elaborate.
“Most people saw that he was injured in the game Friday night, and at that time was displaying symptoms of a mild concussion,” Sumlin said.
“But since then his condition has improved dramatically. We, like every college and pro team in America, have a concussion management plan that we have followed since Saturday morning. I am not going to go into details of what that entails, but I will say that his prognosis for this week is day-to-day.”
Sumlin acknowledged when reached by FanHouse that he was being a little cagey regarding his starting quarterback. With a big game against UCLA Bruins this week and national attention beginning to grow, Sumlin wants his team to maintain as much advantage as he can. Read More >>
