In SEC Men’s Basketball, Kentucky always rules
Throughout its history, SEC basketball has really been about one team: the Kentucky Wildcats. If you don’t quite understand the above video, you probably have not watched a lot of Kentucky basketball (fans hold a sign of the number 3 everytime they make a 3-point shot… I.E. so they make a lot of 3′s). Wildcat Men’s Basketball has had a dominant presence in a portion of every decade since the SEC’s inception in 1932. Only one coach that coached multiple seasons at UK finished with an overall losing record in his tenure: W.W.H. Mustaine, UK’s first ever men’s basketball coach. And no coach, after Kentucky’s first joined the original SEC, has left the university with an overall losing record.
There is no doubt the standard of excellence is high at basketball university USA. Perhaps, where Kentucky has shined most has been in the tournaments. Kentucky has won over half of SEC tournaments in history (27 of 52), owns 7 total NCAA tournaments Titles (Second most to UCLA in history), the most appearances (51) and wins (105, currently tied with North Carolina) in NCAA tournament history. If those stats were too much for you, then know UK also owns 2 NIT Titles in its history too (the only school with multiple NCAA and NIT tournament Titles). It’s no wonder Rupp Arena in Lexington, where the Wildcats play, is the biggest basketball arena in the nation, and regularly leads college basketball in attendance. More often than not considered the Yankees of basketball, fans annually expect a Sweet 16 and Final Four appearances from their Wildcat basketball squad. This year’s crop talent, despite their youth, is not letting expectations fan expectations down. Considered by many the best team in the nation, and tied with the Syracuse Orange for the best record in the NCAA so far this year, the Wildcats are a virtual lock for one of the four tournament #1 seeds. Barring an early exit in this year’s SEC tournament, they are in best spot to grab the overall #1 seed of the tournament’s field of 68. Read More >>
Leslie Miles Flat Out Wins Adverse to Criticism
In the past two weeks, LSU coach Les Miles’ good fortune and clock management “strategy” have seemingly been dissected and debated from Baton Rouge to Budapest.
That shouldn’t be a surprise. Last year – even before the bizarro-13 men on the field win against Tennessee and the Pete Maravich-like bounce pass on a fake field goal fueled victory at Florida.
As much as Miles has been ridiculed and mocked, there remains one constant that no one can dispute: Leslie Edwin Miles flat out wins.
In fact, the Mad Hatter is actually a Mad Genius when it comes to late-game situations. Since 2005, there is not a more successful coach in college football in games decided by one score.
That’s right: with the game on the line, nobody does it better than Miles, who has won 76.7 percent of his games decided by eight points or less.
Since 2005 when Miles came to LSU from Oklahoma State, there have been 27 teams that have played in a BCS bowl. Of those schools, arguably the nation’s winningest programs, only one has a better record in games decided by eight points or less than LSU under Miles.
That school is Cincinnati, in large part to Brian Kelly’s 13-3 record at UC. Since 2005, however, Miles’ 23-7 record in games decided by eight points or less is better than Kelly’s 20-10 record since 2005, including Kelly’s stints at Central Michigan and Notre Dame.
Miles’ late game situations can be maddening to LSU fans. Gregg Becnel, 41, is a lifelong LSU fan and a Miles fan. Becnel’s father, Edmond, played on LSU’s freshman team before being drafted into the Korean War. Becnel explains the predicament facing LSU fans. Read More >>
Les Miles Winning on a Whim
The winning numbers in the Louisiana Lottery Powerball Saturday were 2, 6, 32, 42, 49 and 35. Don’t be surprised if Les Miles had the ticket in his pocket.
LSU’s coach is the luckiest man on earth. A week after an all-time fluke win that earned Miles far more ridicule than praise, he one-upped himself.
The LSU Tigers beat Florida 33-29 thanks to a botched blind, over-the-shoulder bounce-pass fake field goal. That should quiet Miles’ critics for, oh, the next 29 seconds.
“They didn’t like us when were 5-0,” Miles said. “Hopefully, they’ll like us a little better at 6-0.”
They or you or anybody who saw the nuttiness at Florida Field have to like LSU’s defense and resiliency. But nobody left saying, “Gee, that Miles guy is as good as his record.” They were probably saying, “Just who was he in a previous life?” Read More >>
