N.C. State Coach Sticks to His Plan

Whatever doubts and questions about North Carolina State football College coach Tom O’Brien simmered on the message boards and Internet chat rooms before the 2010 season, he didn’t read and he didn’t care what was said. O’Brien had helped build enough programs over the years to know that his plan was right.

But there was the not-so-small matter of convincing others, something he had fallen short of in his first three years at N.C. State as O’Brien’s teams posted a combined 16-21 record. The Wolfpack hadn’t managed a winning season since 2005 and, with rival North Carolina seemingly on the cusp of national recognition, the comparisons were not always kind.

With new athletic director Debbie Yow keeping a watchful eye, even O’Brien knew this needed to be the year that N.C. State showed a visible turning point in its program. And just as O’Brien had planned all along, that reversal came.

N.C. State Proving Their Success is no FairytaleOne month into the 2010 college football schedule, the unfettered hopes of July and August already reduced to painful reality once again, the only team in the Atlantic Coast Conference still making national headlines each week is North Carolina.

Ugly headlines, but headlines nonetheless.

There haven’t been enough feel-good stories to overcome the conference-wide mediocrity displayed in losses to national powers from the SEC, Big Ten and Pac-10, among others, or lift the ACC beyond the seediness of a Tar Heels program that oozes bad news week to week as university, state and NCAA investigations into improprieties drag on.

Which is why Saturday night’s thrilling 41-30 victory by Virginia Tech over No. 23 North Carolina State at Carter-Finley Stadium was great drama, but yet another shot in the heart of the ACC.

Through the first month of the season, the Wolfpack had been the best story in the conference. Counted out from day one, picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic Division behind Florida State, Clemson and Boston College, N.C. State emerged as a contender in a perfect 4-0 September.
