The best there ever was – still with the same jersey – and you can have any name and any number you want on a Nebraska jersey from Onthefield.com
Johnny Rodgers, perhaps the most iconic Nebraska College player of them all, recalls a punt return in 1971 as the perfect nugget in a mountain of gold.
Some of you may think you know that punt return. Chances are, you’ve got the wrong one in mind.
Rodgers will forever be famous for his 72-yard runback at Oklahoma that year, which opened the scoring in what has since been referred to as the Game of the Century–the No. 1 Huskers’ 35-31 win over the No. 2 Sooners. But it’s the 92-yarder vs. Oklahoma State that same season that sticks with the 60-year-old Heisman Trophy winner to this day.
“I remember showing that video clip to an audience and having them count out how many blocks were thrown,” Rodgers said last week after learning that Sporting News was naming the 1971 Huskers the greatest team in the history of College football.

“It came out to 10 guys getting 10 blocks–incredible. One guy, Bill Janssen, a lineman, in his persistence ran all the way down the field to make the last block before I scored. He was there to give a block when you wouldn’t think you’d need it.”
Martinez To Return To Nebraska
1. Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez will return to the Huskers next season. That may seem surprising given that the freshman seemed to spend a lot of time in Bo Pelini’s doghouse this season and was famously dressed down by him in public during Nebraska’s loss to Texas A&M. It appears Pelini and Martinez have worked out their issues and Martinez now wants to “become a better all-around person, College football player and leader.”
2. Pelini, meanwhile, has some explaining to do, according to Lisa Horne of FOXSports.com. Horne reports that, during an on-ship event before the Holiday Bowl, the Huskers coach named naval officer Morgan Ryan an honorary captain, gave him a field pass and a jersey, and promised he’d let the Nebraska native call one play during the game. However, according to Horne, Pelini didn’t actually let Ryan call a play. In his postgame press conference, Pelini told Horne, “It was a joke, ma’am,” when asked about the promise. Horne says that Ryan didn’t interpret it as a joke. Nebraska maintains that it was clear Pelini’s offer was “lighthearted.” Horne posted a video, so you can make up your own mind about Pelini’s intent. I’m not sure if he was clearly joking or not.
3. Oklahoma linebacker Travis Lewis was widely thought to be taking his talents to the NFL next season but he has decided to stay in school. His goal for next year is to win a national championship, and he insists “anything else would be a disappointment.” Lewis was a second team all-Big 12 selection this season and should challenge several Oklahoma career records next season.
4. Not coming back: Clemson defensive end Da’Quan Bowers, this year’s national leader in sacks with 15.5. Bowers, who won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the nation’s top defensive player, announced Wednesday he will enter the NFL Draft. Just about every other Nagurski Trophy winner has gone on to become a big star in the NFL, and Bowers is in the top five of just about every mock draft, so it makes sense that he would choose to go pro.
T-Magic Earning His Heisman
There have been moments of brilliance where it has been easy to envision Nebraska redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez as a serious Heisman Trophy candidate.
Then there have times when you thought, next year.
Well, last Thursday Martinez, whose nickname is T-Magic, may have delivered the most resounding proof that his candidacy for college football’s most prestigious individual award is legitimate. A national television audience had a chance to see what had been limited to highlights in the previous four games as Martinez dazzled in the Cornhuskers’ 48-13 win over Kansas State in what was a meeting of two previously undefeated Big 12 North teams.
The youngster, who came out virtually nowhere to take over the Cornhuskers job this season, ran for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Included was a spectacular 80-yard touchdown run. He also passed for 128 yards and another touchdown, completing five of seven passes.
An impression was certainly left. Read More >>
