Different name, same scheme at Oklahoma State – Customize Your Gear @ www.onthefield.com
The subplots of spring College football repeat themselves year after year. A young quarterback competes to replace an outgoing all-conference leader. A new head coach takes his “culture change” to the practice field. A hot coordinator tries to cater the system that got him rich to the players at a higher-profile program.
Spring ball at Oklahoma State fits none of those descriptions. Still, it ranks as one of the more intriguing programs to watch when practices begin there Monday.
OSU, home of one of the nation’s best offenses the past two years, changed three of its offensive assistant coaches in the offseason. The highlight comes at the top, where Todd Monken replaces Dana Holgorsen as coordinator. But instead of bringing a new scheme to Stillwater, Okla., Monken, running backs coach Jemal Singleton and receivers coach Kasey Dunn will adapt to how the Cowboys have run their offense.
“We want Todd’s, Kasey’s and Jemal’s input in our offense,” coach Mike Gundy said at a February press conference. “We want them to keep most of it the same as last year, but there would have been tweaks either way.”
Perhaps the happiest guy over the news is quarterback Brandon Weeden. The former minor league pitcher thrived last season in the Cowboys’ system. With All-American receiver Justin Blackmon and a slew of offensive line experience returning, Weeden had visions of thriving as much as ever.
Then Holgorsen left for the coach-in-waiting spot at West Virginia. And that left Weeden wondering whether a new coordinator would spoil his football paradise. Gundy in January tried to reassure him.
“He said we were going to keep it the same,” Weeden told Sporting News. “We’re going to try to do a lot of the same things the same way.”
Weeden, who had bonded with Holgorsen, also worried about the relationship with his new coach. Monken said the 27-year-old quarterback defused any potential tension in their first phone conversation when he referred to Monken as “Todd.”
“I knew I wasn’t talking to an 18-year-old,” Monken said at the February press conference. “It was a lot like an NFL guy.”
OSU Coach Mike Gundy Looks to Remain Undefeated
It’s not enough that Oklahoma State will have to battle a Texas Tech team on Saturday that seems like it can be as good as any in the Big 12. The Cowboys must also ward off the effects of a long losing history in Lubbock.
As unbelievable as it sounds, the OSU Cowboys losing streak in Lubbock goes back 66 years.
OSU coach Mike Gundy, however, doesn’t believe history will stomp the Cowboys as they look to remain undefeated and in contention for their first Big 12 South title.
“Our staff has always believed in preparation makes all the difference,” said Gundy, whose program is 2-12-3 all-time at Tech. “I just believe in preparation and hard work and trying to get guys to play with great effort is much more important than anything that has happened over the last 66 years.
