For years now, the blame has fallen on the College program that couldn’t, hasn’t and probably never will.

Now it’s squarely on the coach that could’ve, should’ve – and still hasn’t.

It was bad enough when Steve Spurrier called for field goals to avoid a shutout. Or when he abandoned his highly successful offense. Or when he admitted that he’s just a “7-6 coach.”

Now it has officially hit rock bottom for Spurrier at South Carolina with the fifth – that’s right, fifth — suspension of quarterback Stephen Garcia.

Early Wednesday night, hours after the enigmatic and aloof Garcia was suspended yet again, Spurrier was asked about a limit on suspensions for a player.

“You need to ask someone else that,” Spurrier said after spring practice.

There you have it. The metamorphosis is complete.

Historically awful South Carolina has not only beaten down Spurrier, it has taken away his pride.

How in the world could one of the game’s all-time great offensive minds, a guy who knows more about coaching quarterbacks than most dream, succumb to the utter lunacy that is Stephen Garcia?

Years ago, when Spurrier was building Florida into the behemoth it is now, he went through quarterbacks faster than he goes through range balls. If one didn’t fly straight, there’s always the next.

Didn’t matter if you were a mega recruit, a hometown hero or a walk-on. Everyone was on notice.

The moments of success are fleeting, few and far between. Like a firecracker, they’re vibrant and bright in an instant and gone the next.

The 1984 season is the perfect example: The Gamecocks were 9-0 and ranked No. 2 in the country when a Navy team that went on to win three games upset the season fans had dreamed about, literally, for decades. There’s not been a season to approach it since, especially since the school entered the ultra-demanding, super-competitive Southeastern Conference in 1991.
