This is not Madness…
It’s awkward time as we approach the 15th of March. A day also known as the Ides of March, in Ancient Rome the day was a celebration of Mars, their God of war, but was more famously the day of Julius Caesar’s untimely assassination and betrayal by the friends he considered close. On the 15th of March fans of NCAA College Basketball will be celebrating the famous ‘Ides’ in their own way. Yes, after the opening round of the First Four (the first four play-in games to enter the tournament’s overall field of 64 teams) the NCAA Tournament will officially begin. March Madness is the colloquial term for the time over the duration of the NCAA Tournament; where buzzer-beating shots regularly encroach on narrowly-lead teams and lesser known teams ordinarily poach off more commonly branded basketball. It is a time of passion, persistence and revelry in the arts of war; not unlike the ancient Roman’s celebrations of the God of war. Today, I’ll be starting off tournament coverage of possible tournament teams conference by conference, each of the major conferences, and a bundle of the mid-majors. Read More >>
Is Yankee Stadium Enough to Spark Notre Dame?
Everything was glorious Saturday night for the Fighting Irish, ranging from the moon-lit sky to the pageantry inside stuffed and loud Yankee Stadium to a 27-3 rout of Army. And, no question, they needed such a diversion. That’s because reality for Notre Dame College football these days is an ugly thing.
It’s just less ugly at the moment.
Despite the dismantling of overrated Utah and overmatched Army in consecutive weeks, and more specifically, despite flashing signs of owning a defense for the first time in years, the Irish still have issues. They are a study in mediocrity or worse at a 6-5 record before their expected beat down next week in Southern California, where they’ve lost four straight to USC by an average margin of 20 points.
Beat a USC team that is highly talented but clearly vulnerable, and then we can believe Notre Dame’s revival is here.
For now, Charlie Weis, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie likely are giggling to themselves when the topic is this first edition of the Irish under Brian Kelly and then saying, “It wasn’t just me.”

Looking Back on the Draft
Mark Sanchez was taken fifth in the NFL draft by the New York Jets two years ago. Colt McCoy lasted to the third round this year.
Sunday the two played and the only difference between them was Sanchez had more talented wide receivers, one of whom came up with a game-winning play with 16 seconds left in overtime.
McCoy threw for 205 yards and had a rating of 88.8. Sanchez threw for 299 and had a rating of 87.2. Sanchez has had nothing but hype since he entered the NFL.
McCoy earned a ton of respect.
“Quote me on this,” said Jets defensive lineman Trevor Pryce. “They have a quarterback now. I’m glad I’m not in the AFC North so I don’t have to see him get better. They’ve had a quarterback problem for a long time. They now have a legit quarterback.”

Lane Kiffin’s Decisions Have No Merrit
In Lane Kiffin’s first game as USC’s coach against Hawaii on Sept. 2, Kiffin had the audacity, nerve or gumption — depending on your viewpoint — to attempt a two-point conversion after each of the Trojans’ first three touchdowns.
Whatever you thought, it was downright bizarre. I even joked on my Twitter account that maybe there was a secret NCAA sanction against USC that wasn’t announced prohibiting USC from kicking extra points after touchdowns.
Now, five weeks later, Kiffin is still getting his kicks by not kicking extra points.
In USC’s five games, the Trojans have attempted eight two-point conversions. That already equals the most two-point conversions attempted by a team in a season since 2005, according to cfbstats.com’s Marty Couvillon. Read More >>
Lane Kiffin Looking for the Answer
Ah, college football in Los Angeles.
Glamorous, high-profile and full of recrimination …
USC is 2-0, and no one is satisfied.
UCLA is 0-2, and no one is satisfied.
Good times.
The Trojans won Saturday night, but it was not a resounding victory. It was a lukewarm 17-14 victory over Virginia at the Coliseum. A week after the defense was blistered for giving up 36 points and 588 yards to Hawaii, it was the offense’s turn to hand-wring following a less-than-stellar performance in front of the home fans.
And coach Lane Kiffin looks for answers while he continues to offer up reasons why the Trojans aren’t yet a well-oiled machine. Read More >>
