Miami Could Reopen Marlins Parking Garage Deal
We know that Marlins president David Samson was already furious that Deadspin published the team’s financial records, but it’s a good bet that his anger level is even higher now that their publication is creating some issues with their stadium contract.
Miami mayor Tomas Regalado asked the city attorney to look into reopening the city’s contract with the Marlins for a parking garage at the team’s new MLB stadium, according to the Miami Herald. His request comes on the heels of Miami-Dade Commissioner Rebeca Sosa’s request that county administrators try to get the team to pony up more money for the stadium’s construction. In both cases, the revelation that the team made in excess of $30 million in 2008 and 2009.
“If the answer is in the negative, what recourse do we have to expose those who misinformed the commission and public during a public hearing?” Regalado, who voted against the stadium deal, asked the city attorney. Read More >>
The Marlins Work Quickly to Name a Successor
In just a short amount of time, rumors have begun surfacing, that the Florida Marlins may already have a meeting set to discuss Bobby Valentine’s position as manager of their MLB club.
With the Marlins in just 4th place, 7 and 1/2 games behind the first place Atlanta Braves, the decision came as a surprise to both players as well as Valentine.
“I think, as the manager, you’re always the [fall] guy,” Fredi Gonzalez said.”And I take that responsibility, and I take that challenge on. And when it doesn’t work, I’ll take that bullet, too.”
Yet Gonzalez did aknowledge that, “I felt like we could have played a little better,” he said. “We haven’t been consistent in winning.” Read More >>
Baseball Anomalies
With all of the frenzy circling around March Madness and the imminent postseason in the NBA, you may have overlooked the fact that baseball season is right around the corner. In recent years, handicapping the NFL at the beginning of the season has been virtually impossible due to the fact that the league is rife with parity. In MLB, however, there is no salary cap to level the playing field, so the teams with the biggest pocketbooks are safe bets to end the season on top.
Every once in awhile there are anomalies. One of the most notable of these black horse teams to reach the sport’s pinnacle is the Florida Marlins. Twice in recent memory, the Marlins have risen from mediocrity to win the World Series and inspired fans from all over to hop on the bandwagon and purchase Marlins jerseys. There stay at the top has always been short-lived however, and soon they are back in the cellar of the NL East.
The Florida Marlins Still Looking Ahead
With an MLB best record of 11-1 the Florida Marlins have seen some bullpen action this season bringing them straight out of jams and into a stellar start, setting a seven game winning streak and franchise record.
“It’s not just one guy getting the job done. Multiple people are capable of getting the job done,” said Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla. “It’s not always going to be the guys you think its going to be.”
The winning streak finally dampered by the Pittsburgh Pirates but with as many comebacks as the Florida Marlins have already had this season their hopes still have to be looking on continuing the great record they have begun.
