Mariners to Surprise in ’09?

marinersThe Seattle Mariners, a team that struggled during the 2008 MLB season, started 2009 strong and led the division for the first few weeks. Much attributed the success to the return of Ken Griffey Jr., who began his career in Seattle, and has since risen to Hall of Fame status. Griffey also began the season strong, but was soon struggling to hit like he used to. Ichiro Suzuki has remained the best leadoff man in baseball, and reclaimed his elite status from a bit of a slump last year. Those who know Ichiro often say he’s a player that feeds off the energies of those around him, meaning, if others are performing, he will step up his game. This was all the more apparent as Ichiro began 2009 hitting around .400, his average has since declined to a still impressive .364.

While the Mariners have Ichiro, it’s been quite apparent that they don’t have much else. The Mariner bullpen is solid, but their bats have been silent. Without the threat of a big man in the middle of the order, the Mariners can’t outscore other teams, and find it difficult to win unless utilizing Hernandez or Washburn. Still, fans are hopeful, and Mariners jerseys are plentiful in Seattle.

Mariners manager Don WakamatsuSeattle is currently in line to being teh single most improved team since last season.

With what turned into a rechid 61-101 record seattle is currently on pace to win an upward of 83 games.

The Mariners have finally turned a lacking team into a team that puts forth solid pitching and clutch pitching. A hot ‘American League’ team that has won their last 13-17 MLB appearances, all of the while doing so with minuscule offense with a total of 32 games decided by just one run.

But the solid pitching is everything this Mariners team has needed in over a decade. Any other winning Mariners season always hevily relied on offense and usually failed to result in solid defense.

Mariners Ichiro’s Getting Some Action

Ichiro Suzuki injurySeattle Mariners star Ichiro got some action on Wednesday morning for the first time in more than two weeks and will see some game action on Thursday afternoon, with the game plan for him to get at least four at-bats.

Ichiro started his ninth Major League season on the 15-day disabled list, the first time in his career that he missed more than five games in any one season.  Due to the effects of a bleeding ulcer he has not been eligible to come off the DL next Wednesday.  Results of his recent blood tests are improving allowing for some game action.

“I don’t think he’s at 100 percent yet, but he’s close,” Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said prior to Wednesday night’s game against the Twins. “Everything is improving and we will plan on him being the designated hitter in [an extended spring training] game tomorrow.  “He had a 75-pitch batting practice today and hit 20 home runs,” the manager said.

The Mariners also received good medical news on right-hander Felix Hernandez who twisted his right ankel during the first inning of Monday nights regular season opener.  Hernandez has improved and was able to make his regular bullpen session on Wednesday.

Not long into the season, Griffey is already in the swing of things. In his debut game for the Mariners things have already began stacking up for the long time superstar. With his 8th MLB career opening day home run Seattle is off to the type of start they need with a 6 to 1 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

There were a lot of changes for this hopeful team. The top of the order alone leads the Mariners of with three straight newcomers caused by Ichiro being on the disabled list.

1 game down and 161 to go, but Griffey is sure to be the spotlight throughout the season as the big move over to Seattle also marks the first time in 11 years Ken Griffey Jr. has started in right field.

Since his departure with the Seattle Mariners in 1999 it may be apparent that Griffey’s days of wall-crashing leaps to snatch a take away in center field are more a thing of his past but Seattle fans were their to support and certainly appreciate a tride and true player.

The Cactus League game Thursday with the Mariners Sidney Ponson will be judged by the Royals watching him play against the big boys, Triple-A team, Seattle Mariners.  Ponson already gave the Mariners a run for their money zipping through five innings with just 49 pitches. He gave up one run, on a homer.

Sidney Ponson Texas Rangers

Manager Trey Hillman said,  “He’s already stretched out to 75, 80 pitches, and he’s going to compete for a starting job the same way four or five other guys are, and we’ll see where that falls.  Those others include Brandon Duckworth, Robinson Tejeda and Heath Phillips.

The Aruban right-hander reported to camp on a MLB deal,  ready for a new chance.  “Yeah, I signed a Minor League contract,” he said. “They told me straight up, nothing is for sure.” Ponson on The Netherlands team surprised the baseball world by twice defeating a loaded Dominican Republic team in the Classic.

Pitching last season for the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees he had faced the Royals before and came away impressed stating: “I pitched against this team last year, and it’s not easy,” Ponson said. “It’s not like in the past when you come to KC, and you say, ‘Oh, it’s KC, you can take it easy.’

He is a competitive player both in the present and the past, so what might he add to the Kansas Royals?  Maybe some more scrapes and controversies to heat things up.

Lefty Griffey at Left Field

Griffey was a 10-time Gold Glove Award winner at center field during his first career with the Mariners but didn’t the team bring him back for his hitting?  Griffey will be played at left field a position he hasn’t played that much but he will get acclimated to it.  Griffey stated,  “you just got to where you think the ball’s going to come down.”

Completing three weeks of Spring Training he says his surgically repaired left knee feels good but feels it is about 75 to 85 percent, strength-wise.  The Seattle Mariners are hoping it will be 100 percent by the time the regular season opens.  How long will it take for him to be comfortable in his new position?

Griffey committed eight errors in 302 total chances the most errors he had made since 1999, his final season of his first time with the Mariners.  The Mariners need him driving in runs and contributing to the offense that ranked lowest in the American League last season.  He is improving this spring so what do the Mariners fans feel Ken Griffey Jr. will really do in this position for their team, they will be there with the jersey’s they dug out of the attic.

Mariners Draft Josh FieldsSeattle’s top pick in the 2008 Fist-Year Player Draft,  Josh Fields signed in mid-February.  The media is flocking to the Spring Training complex of the Seattle Mariners to watch Fields face live batters for the first time since last June’s College World Series.

The 23 year old right handed pitcher went to work in a simulated game with a lineup of Griffey Mike Sweeney and Yuniesky Betancourt. He had Griffey looking at a first strike and the rest of his one inning went pretty much just like that.  He made an estimated 25-30 pitches, the three Major League veterans only hit three into fair territory.

The Mariners traded their closer, J.J. Putz to the New York Mets and it was apparent that Fields can face the vetrans showing a good, live fastball and hard breaking ball. Wakamatsu plans to have Fields show his stuff in one os Seattle’s games in Tucson.

Spring Debut Hitless for Ken Griffey Jr.

Ken Griffey Jr Mariners DebutHitless in his first two plate appearances as a designated hitter Ken Griffey Jr. was all smiles during his second Mariners debut. He walked and flied out during his first game back in a Mariners uniform. The 39 year old Griffey once again sported  the No. 24 Griffey Mariners jersey.

Griffey is baseball’s leading active home run hitter, with Seattle hoping this will energize the Seattle fans. Griffey said that if the team can get into the habit of doing the little things, like moving runners over and scoring runs with two outs, “big things will happen.”

While Griffey does not feel he is the big story he downplayed the significance of his contribution during the Mariners exhibition loss against Austrailia’s World Baseball Classic team in Peioria Stadium. Despite the three home run effort by fellow Mariners the game ended in an 11-9 loss and directed the focus off his return.  He waled on a full-count pitch from Aussie left-hander Travis Backley reaching third base before the inning ended. In the second inning swinging at the first pitch with a fly ball for the final out.

Ken Griffy Jr training campIt is a great thing to be able to come back to a long lost team and be able to fit in. Hometown hero and returning star of the Seattle Mariners Ken Griffy Jr. is back and joking with new and former teammates. Since signing a one-year contract for $2 million, plus incentives with the Seattle Mariners.

“I feel like I’m on a darn high school recruiting trip,” Griffey said as well as cracking on former Seattle teammate Jeff Nelson with his “Johnny Unitas haircut”. One thing any Seattle fan does not want to see, however, is the season get rushed upon the Mariner favorite and hope of a new start for the struggling team.
