Nolan Ryan Awarded Ownership of the Rangers
Greenberg says Thursday afternon, “It beats the heck out of fans thinking we’re a bunch of losers and being disappointed that we bought the team.”
As long as Nolan Ryan was in the ownership of Greenberg’s group, there’s no chance of that happening. Baseball’s all-time leader and no-hitters, Ryan, was the reason why for applause that erupted just after midnight CT Thursday morning. Breenberg’s group became vitorious in the very publicized auction over Mark Cuban and Jim Crane for the Texas Rangers.
Greenberg had this to say about the first moves as new owners, “Ultimately, I represent the whole organization and am the contact person with Major League Baseball. But I understand our baseball operations department is as good as any in the game. What we need to do is get the club going on the sales and marketing side, build on our on-field success and take advantage of the passion and enthusiasm that’s building in the community.”
Ryan and general manager Jon Daniels will be in charge of the baseball even though Greenberg Knows that Bruce Kison holds the record in the world series for the most hit batters in a game. Greenberg, instead, will be the brains when it comes to the business side. Read More >>
Nolan Ryan Waiting for the Green Light on The Rangers
As the hearing began to go over the Texas Rangers’ bankruptcy plan, Nolan Ryan and all interested parties looked for a Judge to sign off on the deal to unravel a formally approved group, led by Hall of Fame pitcher and Rangers president Nolan Ryan, to take over the teams ownership.
The Restructuring officer, whom is court-appointed, backs up the plan after earlier objections. Because the auction had a result in a higher price for the Texas Rangers, creditors who installed the sale no longer oppose the plan.
An attorney for some of the top creditors, Andrew LeBlanc, “I was wrong. I’ve never been happier to say I was wrong.”
Ryan and sports attorney Chuck Greenberg won a showdown with Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, for the AL West-leading Rangers just after midnight. The value of the winning bid, according to court documents, is $590 million. Read More >>
Ozzie Guillen Making Sense With Boisterous Comments
With just a few big league seasons under his belt as Texas Rangers’ outfielder in the late ’80s, Ruben Sierra was an MLB All-Star, an emerging superstar, a soon-to-be millionaire, and unhappy. He felt alone in North Texas as a young man from Puerto Rico. He didn’t speak much English, and few around him spoke his native Spanish.
“If you had asked Ruben earlier in his career whether he wanted to stay with the Rangers,” Sierra’s agent then, Chuck Berry, later told Texas Monthly, “he may have said ‘no.’ ”
That changed when the Rangers hired a longtime and well-known baseball journalist from Puerto Rico named Luis Mayoral, who had been a confidant of Roberto Clemente, as a liaison for its growing Latin American contingent. Read More >>

Yankees and Rays Clash in Pivotal Series
Who will come out on the other side of this weekends series on top as MLB’s best baseball record holder.
This weekend, in Florida, the two best teams in baseball this season so far, New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays, will meet in the headline series this weekend.
The champion of the World Series, the Yankees, will lead the 2008 American League champions by two games. Although the New York Yankees won best record in the majors, it won’t help them try to get to the World Series this Fall.
Here’s the lineup for the weekend with New York: Phil Hughes, on the mound Friday night with 21 ER in last 29 IP, Javier Vazquez Saturday with 4.54 ERA, and CC Sabathia Sunday with 10 straight starts of three ER or less. The lineup for the Rays will go as follows: Wade Davis, who has five ER last 21 IP, the No-Hit kid Matt Garza, and James Shields 154 hits in 135 IP.
When Hughes and Sabathia start, the Yankees will be a 29-11 this year combined, but when Vaquez hits the hill, it’s only 9-9. When Davis and Shields start for the Rays, they will be a combines 20-20, but when Garza takes the pill, its a mere 13-7. Read More >>
Moving the Start of the World Series Forward
In order for the 2011 World Series to avoid playing in November, Major League Baseball will be planning to start and end the season earlier compared to previous years.
The play for next season will be preceding Thursday or Friday, rather than having the nationally televised season opener on Sunday night.
The 2011 season is scheduled to end around September 28th. A few days after the season ends, the first round of playoffs will begin. The World series should begin October 19th, which is a Wednesday. It should hopefully end the seven-game series on October 27th.
Through the MLB.com, commissioner Bud Selig indicated that the idea has been discussed between the owners for the past few years. Also discussed was to investigate different ways to help improve the game. Read More >>
Awaiting A-Rods 600th Home Run
It took A-Rod, the New York Yankees third baseman, 2,354 games to reach number 599. It took another five games for the mini-milestone to happen.
His at-bats that lead up to number 600 would normally cause fans to cheer in anticipation. It wouldn’t just be baseball fans that waited in anticipation, but also sports fans. Every time he went up to bat, sports fans would be holding their breaths.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t feel that way anymore.
As soon as Wednesday night against the Indians, A-Rod could hit his number 600. If or whenever he does reach his goal, it would still be worth the celebration. It would be, after all, seventy-nine years before someone attempts to reach that number.
After twenty-three hits, the umpire decided to switch to a specially marked ball so that if A-Rod did make the potential historic at-bat, you wouldn’t miss it. Read More >>
Wheeling and Dealing
It seems like baseball players change teams at the drop of a hat. As an avid Mariners fan, I was ecstatic when we signed Cliff Lee in the offseason and immediately went out to have custom baseball jerseys made for my son and myself. But it’s no secret that the M’s are struggling this year, and we’ve already dealt the ace, who was one of the bright spots on the team.
This is the standard procedure in the MLB, as losing teams look to dump salary in the middle of the season and contenders look to beef up their rosters for a deep run in the playoffs. I realize each organization is trying to do the best thing at the moment, but at some point you have to create an identity for your team. Sure, the Mariners have Ichiro, but there has been a revolving door of supporting cast members for years, and this issue isn’t exclusive to Seattle. Personally, I would like to see players stay in a city for a few years, but with free agency, that’s just a dream.
A Call For Change in NCAA Baseball
There is a reason why the pros use wood bats. If they still used metal bats like they did in little league all the way until Division 1 college ball, this horrible accident of a pitcher being hit in the head would happen much more frequently. The grown men in the MLB can hit a ball so hard that it is almost impossible to protect yourself on the pitcher’s mound. The interesting dilemma is that college players in Division 1are almost just as mature as these hard-hitting mature men in the MLB.
The Texas Rangers right-hander Dustin Nippert escaped what could have been a serious injury when he was hit in the head by Austin Jackson’s line drive in the sixth inning of an 8-6, 14-inning win over the Detroit Tigers Monday night. The Rangers said Nippert, who walked off the field under his own power, was taken to a hospital for a CT exam, which was negative. He then returned to the team’s hotel.
“We’ll probably give him a couple days off, just because you want to be careful when a guy gets hit in the head, but he’s OK,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said. “It looked a lot worse than it actually was.” Washington said there was a chance that the Rangers might put Nippert on the disabled list, partially as a precautionary measure but also because their bullpen was severely depleted by Monday’s 14-inning game. Roy Oswalt St. Louis Cardinals Sights Thrown For a Loop
In 1969 when the Rolling Stones said, “You can’t always get what you want, and if you try sometime you might find you get what you need”, Roy Oswalt wasn’t even born but the timely lyrics are speaking directly to him today.
With only eight days remaining before the trade deadline, it’s looking more likely that this next week could be the last one Roy Oswalt spends pitching in a Houston Astros uniform. The Phillies have engaged in talks with the Astros about trading for the pitcher, and Oswalt would be willing to waive his no-trade clause to move north to Philadelphia.
Though it seems the Phillies aren’t his preferred destination. Oswalt has a definite preference, and that it appears to be the St. Louis Cardinals. Read More >>
