Moving into MLS All-Start fan voting, available online thru July 6th, has increased from 8 Sounders players starting for the All-Star team to now 10 of the 11 available starting positions which is unprecedented considering the Sounders is simply an expansion team debuting this 2009 season.

Cracking Down on

Eduardo da Silva leg breakingMLS is heating up as more and more red cards come flying out. Saturdays Los Angeles Chivas game included three red cards, 6 yellows and a total of 31 fouls as the referee steadily had to regulate the Chivas game.

Certain instances have arose where players such as Borman slide tackles cleats first but doesn’t connect on what could be a vicious collision.

There cannot be a suitable explanation for tackling like this so professionals may very well need to be held accountable for as much as their approach to slide tackling. The last thing the Major League Soccer wants is a Eduardo da Silva style incident.

Looking into everything from coming down hard on players to stricter officiating may be necessary and the coming weeks are sure to tell where this is going to lead as either players or the MLS officils are going to have to step in. The MLS surely does not want to be considered a hack league as it tries to build a possible world wide fan base caused by reckless fouling.

Andrew Hauptman Chicago Fire ownerChicago Fire Owner, Andrew Hauptman, and his hopeful team’s desire to win the MLS championship is an understandable goal but even with his pretty boy smile, talk of winning this early seems arrogant.

“I don’t like to do things halfway,” Hauptman said. “There is nothing fun about being mediocre. That game in Columbus was devastating. We need to win, end of story, full stop.”

Most would understand that as MLS looks to increase it’s exposure the league and teams alike are going to make certain moves to win favor and increase its fan base. For example the David Beckam’s deal with AC Milan, but there has to be more to the Chicago Fire FC.

“David Beckham has been great for the league,” Hauptman said. “In every respect, he has delivered. The net result is, it’s been a positive. Everybody got something. The league did take some hits, and some aspects have been unfortunate, but there has been positive exposure for the league.”

However there could be so much more for the hopeful owner and its team to spotlight other than a quick headline.

While other leagues and teams talk about financial struggle, Major League Soccer in Seattle sold out all 22 thousand season-ticket packages. And something has to be said about the instant passion fans are having for the Seattle Sounders football club. With a long standing tradition for professional sports the Sounders are not even new to the Seattle area as a club having first played here in the 1970s, in the former North American Soccer League.
