Seahawks Remain Only Team Eligible to Get Vincent Jackson from Chargers
If San Diego is going to trade top-flight wide receiver Vincent Jackson, it’s going to be to the Seattle Seahawks. The question now is this: Are the Chargers serious about trading Jackson?
Maybe not. The agents for Jackson, Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod, say they were denied permission by San Diego management to talk to any team other than Seattle. The Seahawks were given permission to talk to Jackson, who has made it clear he does not want to play under the one-year tender offer the Chargers have made to the restricted free agent.
Jackson, who has 168 catches for 2,888 yards and 19 touchdowns the last three seasons for San Diego, would be a huge boost to the Seattle offense. But Schwartz said he doesn’t get the impression that the Chargers are trying to move his client.
“I asked the Chargers if we could talk to the rest of the teams in the NFL,” Schwartz told Yahoo.com “They said there were certain teams they didn’t want to trade him to, and I said, ‘Fine, tell me those teams and we can exclude them.’ Even after that, they said no, so the only conclusion I can come to is they don’t want to trade him.”
The agents are saying about a half dozen teams have indicated some level of interest in obtaining Jackson’s services. If the Chargers want to work the best deal they can, it would seem to make sense that they open the field to other interested parties.
NFL Teams Awake to Slumping Ticket Sales
With a predicted single digit decline in ticket sales this year and already with issues to come, can Goodell make a change in thee economic times with the Jacksonville Jaguars and San Diego Chargers already anticipating television blackouts.
“We’ve always said we’re not immune from the economy. I think it reflects two things, what you’re seeing in Jacksonville. One is the quality of preseason games. I think our fans are sort of seeing the quality of the games aren’t up to NFL standards. So I think that’s a factor. Additionally, they are …one of the markets where we’re seeing some challenges for ticket sales coming into the 2009 season. And we’ll have other markets where we’ll have those challenges. It’s all part of the challenges we’re seeing in the economy and what our fans are going through. Our clubs have been working hard during the off-season to try to create other ways to get people into the stadium, to have policies that are a little more flexible. Hopefully, they’re going to pay dividends for us,” said Goodell.
Apparently an NFL rule requires local television blackouts if games aren’t sold out 72 hours before kickoff which may leave some hesitant to make local plans and inadvertently end up affecting local business.
“The policy is important in supporting the ability of the clubs to sell tickets and keeping our games attractive as television programming with large crowds,” NFL league spokesman, Brian McCarthy said in an e-mail.
NFL Hall of Famer – Lance Alworth
Alworth finished his 11 AFL/NFL seasons with 543 receptions for 10,266 yards. He also rushed for 129 yards, returned 29 punts for 309 yards, gained 216 yards on 10 kickoff returns, and scored 87 touchdowns (85 receiving and 2 rushing).
He was taken 8th overall in the first round of the 1962 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. The American Football League’s Oakland Raiders drafted him as their first pick (ninth overall) in the second round of the 1962 AFL draft, and then traded his rights to the San Diego Chargers in return for halfback Bo Roberson, quarterback Hunter Enis, and offensive tackle Gene Selawski. Alworth opted to sign with the Chargers instead of the 49ers. The Chargers moved Alworth to wide receiver. His slender build, speed, grace, and leaping ability earned him the nickname “Bambi.”
Alworth was an AFL Western Division All-Star in seven consecutive seasons, from 1963 through 1969, and was an AFL All-League flanker the same seven seasons, selected by his peers from 1963-1966, and by newspaper wire services from 1967-1964. Alworth was the UPI’s 1969 AFL Most Valuable Player and is a member of the AFL All-Time Team. He scored on a 48-yard touchdown pass in the Chargers’ 1963 AFL Championship Game victory over the Boston Patriots. In Alworth’s 8 AFL seasons, he led the league in receiving yards and receptions 3 times. He also set a Chargers record with 83 touchdowns.
Tough Economic Times for NFL Player
Possibly one of the greater quarterbacks straight out of college along side Peyton Manning yet Ryan Leaf some how lost his way. Now a former NFL quarterback he finds himself facing burglary and drug-related charges, a slight misrepresentation as he has been indicted for eight hydrocodone counts.
With 14 touchdowns and 36 interceptions during his disastrous 4 year career, 3 with the San Diego Chargers and lastly a partial year with the Dallas Cowboys, Leaf’s potential turned into a horrific bust.
“When playing football became a job, it lost its luster for me,” he told ESPN’s Matt Mosely. “I kind of got out of the spotlight and life’s never been this good.”
Sacked $1 billion Stadium for Chargers
The Chargers on Thursday rejected a developer’s proposal to build a $1 billion stadium as part of a redevelopment of the land surrounding Qualcomm Stadium, saying the project would be too enormous for the Mission Valley site.
The Chargers feel they need a new stadium to remain financially competitive with other NFL teams but they did not feel the developers proposal had any realistic chance which called for a name of The River Park at Mission Valley, would include a 70,000-seat stadium, 3.76 million square feet of office space in 11 buildings, a 16-story hotel, nearly 6,000 residential units, 500,000 square feet of retail space and 14,000 parking spaces.
The projected stated to be “fantastical,” with “mythical skyscrapers, mythical prices and a mythical stadium.” It has just been viewed as one with zero chance of actually happening due to the scale and the San Diego Chargers are hoping to use a similar but smaller development with public land as a way to build a stadium.
LaDainian Tomlinson to Lead Chargers into 2009
Despite being an aged running back by league standards, LaDainian Tomlinson is still one of the best in the NFL. Now at the age of 30, Tomlinson will once again be leading the Chargers in 2009, who won the AFC West in 2008 with a record of 8-8. While the Chargers have seen some success in recent years, the team has yet to make it to the Super Bowl. Tomlinson has been with the Chargers since his career started in 2001, and is still a force to be reckoned with on the field. While younger RBs like Adrian Peterson will no doubt have numbers that exceed LT, the old Charger will still push the team forward like few running backs can. Tomlinson placed fourth in the AFC in rushing yards in 2008, and also had a career low of 1,110 yards. But few RBs ever see that much yardage in a single year, even some of the best.
It’s impossible to not find LaDainian Tomlinson amongst an assortment of Chargers jerseys, and in many ways, LT is the heart of the Charger’s franchise. Though his numbers were competitive in 2008, fans wonder if he’ll still be able to find success in 2009. But LT seems confident that he has a few solid years left.
Coming to Terms with NFL Betting
All stemming from the final ruling of the Pittsburgh Steelers-San Diego Chargers game that kept the Steelers from covering the 5 point spread which, according to R.J. Bell of the Web site PreGame.com, resulted in an estimated $64 million swing in “payouts” across the country.
This even grabbed the attention of Bob Costas enough to make a brief allusion to the potential financial sway from the ref’s ruling. With so much chatter and posting across the country the elephant could no longer be ignored which is gambling on NFL games. Even other interests such as fantasy football or a friendly bet with colleagues at work would have brought controversy along with this call.
Like it or not gambling on football is rearing its ugly head.
