Brian Westbrook Makes a 49ers Deal
The 49ers acted quickly to fill the hole on their running back depth chart, signing Brian Westbrook to a one-year deal with a base value of $1.25 million. Westbrook, who spent all eight seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, was released by his longtime team after an injury-plagued 2009 season.
His signing was precipitated by the retirement of Glen Coffee, who decided to hang up his cleats after just one season in the NFL. Coffee was to be the 49ers’ second-string running back in 2010.
That role will now fall to some combination of Westbrook and Anthony Dixon, the talented rookie who rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries in the 49ers’ first preseason game on Sunday.
Westbrook has two Pro Bowl seasons to his credit, including a remarkable 2007 season where he rushed for 1,333 yards while recording 90 catches, both career highs. At 30 years old, Westbrook was reportedly deciding between backup roles with the 49ers, Rams and Redskins.
With the 49ers, Westbrook could double his $1.25 million salary should he reach certain incentives in his contract.
Crabtree Affect
Top draft pick Michael Crabtree holding out only on himself as the 10th overall pick out of Texas Tech
“In terms of Crabtree, when he comes in, he comes in,” San Francisco 49ers’ coach Singletary said Friday. “Would you love to have him in? Absolutely. You’d love to have him. Do we want him here? Yes, we want to have him in. But until that happens, I just can’t sit back and think about the what-ifs. All I can do is concentrate on what is, and control that.”
Focusing on whom is out there performing now, Singletary continues to develop the 49ers receiving corps in preperation for the Denver Broncos this coming Friday.
“This is not a political speech, it’s just the truth,” Singletary said. “We’ve got wide receivers that (coach) Jerry Sullivan is working his tail off with them. They’re growing, progressing, so we’re fine for right now.”

49ers WR Thinking of Sitting Out Year
The San Francisco 49ers‘ first round pick Michael Crabtree has supposedly made statements that he will sit out the season if he does not get the contract amount he is looking for. To me this is nonsense for the fact that he will be shooting himself in the foot by listening to his adviser’s. These people are only looking out for themselves and not looking out for the players best interest. So what if he sits out the year and enters next years draft. What great GM would waste a pick knowing that he could possibly sit out again wanting more and more money. He needs to just sign for a amount that is the going rate for NFL players of his caliber and last time I checked he had not played a down yet.
People thought the teams that passed this player up in the draft were crazy. I can see why they didn’t want to deal with this players agent and Crabtree management group supporting him. I hope that Crabtree does well, but if he does sit out for the season or even a few games he is worth the effort and money. It would be funny for all this fuss if he turns out to be a bust.
Finally A Coach With Old School Standards
Finally a coach that is willing to stand up and set standards. Mike Singletary, hall of famer and new head coach of the 49ers did not make the type of appearance during his loss to the Seahawks at home. Although it may not be best practice to bring the decision of a head coach towards a player to the media it does seem that with the past seasons for the San Fransisco 49ers the tone needs to be set and Singletary was their to voice his beliefs in how a team should operate.
‘I am from the Old school,’ Singletary exclaimed. Moving moving on to say that he ‘would not tolerate players that think it’s about them when it’s about the team,’ referring to Vernon Davis and why he was asked to leave the field.
Furthermore he explained the reasoning behind the expectations he sets as a coach and in dealing with selfish players.
