NFL’s Con-fessional Bowl

Let me give you a scenario, and you can tell me if it seems like something you’d enjoy watching. The scenario involves a group of athletes voted to play in an all-star game. Fans have a certain number of votes per each position, and may cast an unlimited number of ballots - representing what is supposed to be 1/3 of the total vote for athletes. These athletes that eventually get voted in get to travel, usually with their family’s, to Honolulu, HI a week before the all-star game. Keep in mind these athletes are still recovering from a full 16 game season of hitting, tackling, lifting and rehabbing. The athletes will get to lounge around in 80-90 degree weather, practice a little bit with their fellow conference all-stars, play pranks on each other, converse, surf, and talk about who is going to win their sport’s champhttp://review2akill.com/2012/01/27/no-har-bowl/ionship the next week. Doesn’t sound half bad for the athletes, does it?

This scenario I’m describing is the NFL Pro Bowl, a game held (as of the past few years) a week before the Super Bowl. It is the only major sports all-star game that garners lower T.V. ratings than its regular season games. Players are voted in based on what could essentially be equated to a popularity contest. Coaches for each conference are automatically selected from the teams that lost the NFC and AFC title games, coaching teams, with usually, a good percentage of players opting out of the game for various reason, some related to injuries sustained during the regular season, some because their respective team is the one playing in the Super Bowl the following week… And if you’re Randy Moss, back before the game was held after the Super Bowl, you’ll opt out of playing, cause the week before your New England Patriots ended up losing the Super Bowl. Hawaii was just not motivating enough.

Worst Jersey Ever..? Do You Think You Could Do Better?

To be honest, when I think of the pioneering of sports jersey’s, I don’t think of the 500 different helmet, jersey and pants bottom combinations Nike has branded against Oregon Ducks. I do though get mixed feelings when I see the throwback uniforms the Memphis Grizzlies sported against the Clippers last Thursday (pictured on the right).

The Grizzlies’ retro jersey’s, and the game against the Clippers, was to be a sentiment to the old American Basketball Assosiation, 1967-1976, a “lively” league famous for its prominent red, white and blue basketball, entertaining (.. although unconventional) half-time promotions and the adoption of a three-point shot; advertised as the “home run” of basketball. If you’ve ever seen the movie, Semi-Pro, then know Will Ferrell and the Flint Michigan Tropics weren’t far from what the ABA was at the time. The league was successful enough though that Four of  ABA teams eventually were adopted into the NBA: the Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets. Thursday was to be allusion to a rematch of the old Los Angeles Stars and Memphis Pros/Tams/Sounds; and yes, Memphis did change their team name 3 times in 5 years. Read More >>

Peyton Manning in Seattle?

The rebuilding of the Indianapolis Colts’ franchise is well under way, but one question persists: Will it involve the NFL franchise’s very foundation?

As the Colts move from what was to what will be, the future of quarterback Peyton Manning remains uncertain. Owner Jim Irsay holds Manning’s fate with the Colts in his hands and will make the call by March 8 when a $28 million option bonus is due.

In an exclusive interview with Indianapolis Star columnist Bob Kravitz, the NFL‘s only four-time MVP touched on several topics, including how things have changed at the team complex. That, by the way, is where he continues to rehab from Sept. 8 neck surgery that forced him to miss the 2011 season.

“I’m not in a very good place for healing, let’s just say that,” Manning said. “Everybody’s walking around on eggshells. I don’t recognize our building right now. There’s such complete and total change.”

The day after the Colts ended the season 2-14, Irsay fired vice chairman Bill Polian and vice president/general manager Chris Polian. He replaced them with general manager Ryan Grigson.

On Jan. 17, Irsay and Grigson fired coach Jim Caldwell and most of his coaching staff.

So many individuals key to the Colts’ long run of success—115 wins from 2000-09, a league record for a decade; a league record-tying nine consecutive playoff appearances; two trips to the Super Bowl, including a win over Chicago in Super Bowl XLI—no longer are around.

And then there was one. Not surprisingly, there’s only one NFL team standing without a defeat this NFL season, and even less shocking, it’s the defending NFL Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers.

After the Saints (4-2) and Lions (5-1) were upset Sunday, the 49ers (5-1) [from the NFC WEST WOOOOO HOOOOOO!] have rocketed to the No. 2 spot behind the Packers in the NFC. Looking at the entire league, however, the AFC’s Baltimore Ravens have emerged as the Packers’ biggest threat to a second title.

It’s not hard to make a case for the Ravens (4-1) as second best after their 29-14 home win over Houston. The Ravens’ obvious signature strength is the playmakers at each level of their defense—Haloti Ngata, Ray Lewis, Jarret Johnson, Terrell Suggs and Ed Reed. They got three sacks from that group Sunday while also slowing down a prolific Texans run offense. The Ravens’ offense can control the ball with Ray Rice and the running game, and it is complemented nicely by timely big pass plays from Joe Flacco.

South of Green Bay, Baltimore is the league’s most complete team and already has big wins over last year’s two AFC finalists, the Steelers and Jets. If the season ended today, the Ravens’ defense vs. Aaron Rodgers would make for a highly competitive Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

There are two more AFC teams to consider, of course: New England and Pittsburgh. Unlike the Packers or Saints, they are teams with quarterbacks who have won multiple Super Bowls, and both Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger are back to their gritty winning ways. Consider that Brady, in an “off” game, lifted his Patriots over the Cowboys late, and Roethlisberger has been unfazed by a foot injury the past two weeks.

Calling All Arms

Thanks to the NFL lockout, the league’s free-agent market didn’t open as scheduled in March, and there has been a freeze on player transactions in the two months since.

Whenever teams can get back to the business of signing, trading and releasing players, here’s a rundown of what veteran quarterbacks are expected to be available. With the league expected to operate on 2010 rules in the wake of a short-term labor solution, it would limit the unrestricted free agents at the position to players with six or more accrued seasons.

Matt Hasselbeck proved in the playoffs that he still has something left to lead a team, despite the fact he turns 36 in September. If he’s protected well, he can provide one decent year as a starter. Vinnie Iyer ranks him as the top free agent QB available. (AP Photo)

Top five unrestricted free agents

With Peyton Manning and Michael Vick both tagged as franchise players, it leaves a mixed bag of aging stopgaps and young passers out of favor with their current teams:

1. Matt Hasselbeck, Seahawks. He proved in the playoffs that he still has something left to lead a team, despite the fact he turns 36 in September. If he’s protected well, he can provide one decent year as a starter.

2. Marc Bulger, Ravens. Baltimore didn’t need to use him as a No. 2 last season because Joe Flacco continued to be very durable. There’s a chance Bulger could end up with a non-Rams team in the NFC West. One team that needs to become more interested is Chicago because Bulger knows Mike Martz’s offense and could be a solid backup to Jay Cutler.

3. Alex Smith, 49ers. San Francisco reportedly made an early offer to re-sign the 2005 first overall pick and still would like to bring him back after drafting Colin Kaepernick in the second round. Smith deserves another shot, whether it’s San Francisco or somewhere else.

4. Tarvaris Jackson, Vikings. After drafting Christian Ponder in the first round, it doesn’t appear the Vikings are interested in re-signing Jackson. He’s worth a flyer because he comes with good experience at just 28.

5. Kerry Collins, Titans. Collins has stuck around because of his big arm, and as long as he has time to throw, he can still help a team that has everything—running game, line, receivers—in place around him.

Top five QB-needy teams

1. Cardinals. Even though they had quite a mess at the position with Derek Anderson, Max Hall and John Skelton shuffling through the pocket, they passed on drafting a QB. No wonder they are reportedly banking on a big trade.

NFL Blame: Owners

The NFL is headed for a lockout and the court of public perception is forming. For the first time in labor history, the jury is going to convict the guys in the $3,000 suits.

That’s because they’re acting like the guys in the $2,000 suits. NFL owners are emulating the players, which is the one sure way to infuriate an already fed-up jury pool.

That’s me, you, your neighbor, your neighbor’s hamster and everyone else who’s being squeezed by the Great Recession. Even in the best of times, it’s aggravating to see college dropouts making $8 million a year for playing a game.

For once, the dropouts seem to recognize this. Neither side is going to win this PR battle, but the NFLPA is at least trying not to look like a bunch of greedy buffoons.

Meanwhile, the owners are huffing and puffing and alienating any fan who is bothering to follow this nonsense. The actual issues don’t matter to most people, though a few things should be noted:

The owners are the ones who opted out of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. They won’t open their books. They want this fight.

The players?

“Let us play,” they’re saying.

And they’re saying it over and over in a commercial released during Super Bowl week. You see a padlocked fence and an empty stadium. You hear flags quietly fluttering and a shower slowly dripping. Players, stadium employees, fans (including the requisite tyke in a helmet) say “Let Us/Them Play!”

The Other Side

Bill Belicheck and Patriots Dominate 2009 Draft

Bill Belicheck and Patriots Dominate 2009 Draft

The Patriots and Bill Belicheck are notorious for their drafting abilities.  While other teams struggled to move to the top to find their ideal picks for the 2009 draft, the Patriots were content to avoid the first round and draft in the second, picking up several players that had some other teams scratching their heads and scrambling for their scouting reports.  The Patriots have a knack for choosing sleeper players that have a lot of potential but not a lot of publicity.  While doing this can yield dozens of players with significant NFL potential, it also keeps the Patriots under the salary cap, which ensures that the team has the ability to recruit and maintain high end talent when necessary.  While no team wants to admit that their drafting abilities are insignificant compared to the Patriots, most agree that Bill Belicheck has an edge over the rest.

There will be several new players wearing Patriots jerseys this season, and if the past is any indication, the Patriots won’t be left out of the playoffs.  With Tom Brady healthy again after suffering an injury that left him out of the 2008 season, most analysts agree the Patriots have a chip on their shoulder and will be dangerous in 2009.  Some even believe we’ll see a repeat of the Patriots 2007 performance which saw them undefeated in the regular season.

sporting eventThere’s nothing that quite compares to the excitement and energy offered by a live sporting event. Being able to see beloved sports stars perform their athletic feats in person adds an entirely new dimension to the game. Whether you’re interested in basketball, baseball, football, or soccer, you can always gain a new appreciation for how talented the players truly are by watching them live. And with so much time and energy dedicated to these teams, it is little surprise that people develop a fanatical connection and interest in these teams.

If you are one of these dedicated and loyal fans, what better way to express that interest than with your team’s merchandise? For many people, the best piece of sports merchandise is the team jersey. And with custom jerseys, you can adorn your jersey with your own name or custom saying. This way, you can truly feel like one of the team, and it also makes the perfect outfit every time you attend a live sporting event. And as an added benefit, having your name on the jersey means you don’t have to worry about the player being traded and making your jersey out of date!
