With the undeniable importance of this years presidential race both Barack Obama and John McCain have been doing their best to gain the trust of this nations voters. With that being said what better way to capture the spotlight then utilizing the viewer base of Monday Night Football.
So on the eve of this years election both presidential candidates were asked to comment on the one thing they would change in sports - not that we need the government involved in more of our decisions.
“I think it is about time that we had playoffs in college football. I’m fed up with these computer rankings and this and that and the other,” Obama said. “Get eight teams—the top eight teams right at the end. You got a playoff. Decide on a National Champion.”
Barack seems an avid college sports fan as his answer brought a very understandable point to an otherwise confusing system called the BCS or Bowl Championship Series system that bases team rankings by a computer algorithm. Perhaps with the implementation of this notable change the NCAA will attribute his involvement by naming the College national championship game, the Obama Bowl. During the inaugural ceremony fans of both champoinshop teams would adorn Obama custom college jerseys.
McCain on the other hand seemed to have a more objective or politically based answer stating that he would “take significant action to prevent the spread and use of performance-enhancing substances. I think it’s a game we’re going to be in for a long time. What I mean by that is there is somebody in a laboratory right now trying to develop some type of substance that can’t be detected and we’ve got to stay ahead of it. It’s not good for the athletes. It’s not good for the sports. It’s very bad for those who don’t do it, and I think it can attack the very integrity of all sports going all the way down to high school.”
Although not a change per say performance-enhancing substances has been a highly touched upon topic in the world of sports, however I was slightly disappointing at this answer as it did not seem like the first thing that would come to mind from a genuine sports fan.
In coming across the following video we felt almost obligated to share the following footage of fellow New Yorkers and a little innocent fun at the expense of a drunken Mets fan. Fans take time to ignore the onset of the ensuing baseball game at Shea Stadium for some great shots with the unwilling participant of a drunk mans photo shoot.
As each minute passes by a certain fan becomes more and more brave and determined to stack empty beer cans atop the passed out victim and upon continuing to watch even I questioned whether or not someone could continue to stay asleep through all of the commotion. Even the most die hard fans adorning their freshly pressed Mets jerseys stop to participate in the festivities. Luckily, even fellow patrons to the game stopped to at least contemplate the idea that this poor sap is still in fact breathing.
Anaheim-Los Angeles Angels
The Angels obtained their nickname after moving into the American League in 1960 to their home of Los Angeles, the City of Angels.
Baltimore Orioles
Many other minor league clubs have been known as the Orioles as well, but after moving from St. Louis the Browns were named after the state bird of Maryland.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox originally named the Somersets after the club owner had a number of other nicknames throughout their MLB career including the Puritans, Pilgrims and Plymouth Rocks. Finally in 1907 they became the Red Sox after an obvious stocking uniform change.
Chicago White Sox
Originally referred to as the white stockings the Chicago team later changed its name to the White Sox to prevent confusion with a previous team of the same name in the National League.
Cleveland Indians
In the 1890s the Cleveland Indians began as the Spiders, then called the Blues, as well as the Babe or Broncos near the turn of the century. Also named after Napoleon Lajoie after becoming manager they were referred to as the Naps as well as the Molly McGuires after manager Jim McGuire in 1909. Then in 1915 the finalized version of the team name was decidedly the Indians after a newspaper poll was held and the then star of the team, a Penobscot Indian helped influence the voters decisions.
Detroit Tiger
The Detroit Tigers are appropriately named after the stripped stockings the wore.
Kansas City Royals
Elected by fans the Kansas City Royals were named after the famous Americal Royal Livestock and Horse Show held in Kansas City.
Minnesota Twins
Originally the Washington Senators the Minnesota Twins were names after the city in which the reside after moving to the Twin Cities in 1960.
Former Pittsburgh Pirates‘ pitcher admitted to being under the influence of LSD during his 1970 no hitter against the San Diego Padres. Evidentelly he new just hours before he was going to pitch, having thought he had the day off his girlfriend and trip partner soon realized he was going to be pitching later that afternoon.
The Pirates ended up winning the game 2-0 despite Ellis having walked eight batters and hit a few. It was undeniably a highpoint in his baseball career and it may be stated that it is a high point yet to be outdone in great sports achievements. Ellis had long since been known for his intolerance for slights and questioned racism in the sport of baseball. Despite his overall control issues that game in trying to maintain his no hitting streak within the game after fathoming the thought in just the fourth inning.

With the recent advent of sports etiquette being addressed by the NFL it was interesting to note that the original controversy brought on with injuries and potentially harmful flying maple bat fragments. Despite the urgency of this issue there had been no promise that any steps would be implemented or even proposed this season. Perhaps they hired a probability coach and the possibility / cost of a lawsuit did not outweigh the implementation cost of said netting and precautionary measures.
Most would agree that the most viable solution for the time being should easily be the ban of Maple bats. Primadona MLB players can certainly utilize another bat for the safety of the fans that are attending their games. At least until the quality of bats or improved specifications can be established, or extended netting to protect fans, a ban on Maple bats is the least the committee could do to hasten the process.

Heed the new code of conduct implemented by the NFL today. Misbehaving spectators now have the option to be ejected, even barred from coming back. The usual rederick includes unruly and disruptive behavior including foul or abusive language and gestures, interfering with the game in anyway. Impairment or signs of drunkenness but only apparently if it leads to irresponsible behavior, which leads to the question of whether or not there are other types of drunken behavior at a game.
It is apparent that this years NFL experience is going to be an ‘improved’ experience and more centered around a family oriented experience. One team’s fans of note would have to be the Cleveland Browns. The league apparently has left the option open for local franchise provisions which may be included in mailers and posted at the stadiums themselves.
In 1960, the Chicago White Sox became the first team to place a player’s name on the back of the teams jersey. Mainly the result of the MLB’s continued expansion of teams in the early 60s it certainly was time to cater more to newcomers and die hard fans alike in discerning some of their favorite play makers and being able to track opposing players performance etc. I imagine the broadcast announcers welcomed the addition to MLB jerseys as well.
It has been some time since this story first ran but we wanted to make sure and recognize the former Seattle Mariner as Ken Griffey JR joined the exclusive 600 home run club. It seemingly has been a long time coming for the once powerhouse hitter but we always like to give respect where it is due as his 60oth homer soared 413 feet into the right field seats.. A seasoned 38 year old player that surely has a love for the game of baseball Griffey is just the sixth player to reach 600 homers and even though it took longer then expected it surely is a feat for any MLB player.
Griffey will now be remember with the limited number of players to reach this mark including Mark Henderson, Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa. Griffey even reported receiving recent phone calls of encouragment for Willie Mays and Hank Aaron. It had been somewhat of a struggle after injuries began taking their toll on the once prolific slugger but through his battle to hit number 600. And although not necessarily defined by his homers altogether he has been recognized for many aspects in his baseball career. This defining moment even brought talk of ending his career back where most had begun for the super star back in Seattle.

Major League Baseball has announced that during a pre-game ceremony a partial list of additional Hall of Famers will be recognized including Luis Aparicio, Wade Boggs, Gary Carter, Orlando Cepeda, Rollie Fingers, Bob Gibson, Ralph Kiner, Eddie Murray, Earl Weaver and Dave Winfield.
The list of 10 Hall of Famers will be honored prior to the 79th MLB All-Star game on Tuesday July 15th. But this years All-Star Game will also be somewhat of an honorary event in itself as it will be held at Yankee Stadium during its last year as the home of the New York Yankees. Also a number of MLB players who are being inducted with this announcement - Dave Winfield, Wade Boggs, Gary Carter and Ralph Kiner - all have ties with the Yankees franchise
Red Carpet, a slew of celebrity appearances and of course sponsorship, make an All-Star event to watch.
As I have begun formulating more and more information pertaining to the history of sports it is certainly made me consider what the future will be looking back upon during these years in sports. There were certainly a fair share of scandals in MLB’s past but there just seems to be an over obsession with uncovering dirt, and overall players cannot seem to stay out of the infamous spotlight.
Viagra, a seemingly irrelevant ‘enhancement drug’ solely intended for hitting home runs…off the field is now the target for ban from the MLB with the discovery of its use initially by New York Yankees own, Roger Clemens. The supposed ‘Vitamin V’, which is not officially banned by Major League Baseball or other sports but with the uncovering of its widespread use it is being researched for its performance enhancing affects by three US universities, specifically referred to as sildenafil citrate.
Where will players, regulations, and all the commotion stop? Baseball cannot ever be quite the same, and talk of performance enhancers will certainly bring a comical topic to any discussion. With the advent of an erectile dysfunction medication, its intended use and recent implications in its intended performance-enhancing uses such as building endurance and offsetting the impotence causing side-effect of testosterone injections (the drugs intended use), where will the line be drawn in the future. And is the MLB overstepping that line by banning something being used for its intended use? Pretty soon players may be finding themselves unable to play longer innings.
