Wii Football Interaction Upped a Notch

The Nintendo Wii is not new to creating interactive peripherals to up the realism of playing a slew of next generation games. Yet a new remote may just take things to the next level when playing along in a future NCAA or NFL video game the way flailing your arms just has not quite captured. Looking to up the ante well above the standard golf club, tennis racket, and steering wheel remotes the newest patent looks to do more then just replicate a real football.Nintendo Wii football peripheral

It is uncertain whether or not the patent will ever become a functional product but the concept is there. The football controller will be designed to assist in a “real-world” football experience and apparently with the patent application recently filed by vice president of R&D at Nintendo of America, Howard Cheng, the next line of games could be the trial run.

Who Let the Dogs Out?

Michael Vick's conditional reinstatementThe anticipation in Philadelphia is growing as Michael Vick takes advantage of his conditional reinstatement. Signed to a two year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, Vick has returned to the NFL. It may even be a first, allowing a convicted federal felon to play in the NFL. I mean, yeah we’ve seen plenty of convicted criminals out on the gridiron but how many have just polished off a two year stint under the watchful eye of Uncle Sam? Despite the stories we already know, Vick’s put up great numbers and has proven he’s a true force out on the field.

Plus, he’s going to sell a lot of tickets. Remorseful and ready for more, Vick may even be allowed to play the first game in September. We haven’t seen or heard much out of Philadelphia’s training camp this year. Even if we had, we’ve yet to see if Michael Vick still has it and can perform up to expectations in a regular NFL season game. Eagles’ head coach Andy Reid seems convinced that Vick’s remorse is genuine. Philadelphia Eagles‘ owner Jeffrey Lurie on the other hand, was not entirely convinced when Reid made the decision to sign the controversial player.

Raiders Getting Raided, Again.

Raiders Coaches Fight FootballOnce again the internet’s abuzz with rumors about the Oakland Raiders coaches fight on August 5 at their training camp in Napa, California. Usually it’s the players but it looks like their devoted leaders have come down to slugging it out instead. According to news reports, Oakland Raiders’ assistant coach Randy Hanson (pictured at right) was struck by Raiders’ head coach Tom Cable (pictured at left) suffering a broken jaw. Head coach Cable faces felony charges if the allegations turn out to be true.

The case was initially closed as Randy Hanson was unwilling to cooperate with police. But following his dismissal by the teams’ owner, Mr. Hanson had a sudden change of heart. Given three alternatives to being assistant coach, Hanson chose none of them and instead elected to hire an attorney. In addition, Hanson’s attorney claims the medical records will indicate that Hanson suffered the broken jaw as a result of the altercation with head coach Cable.

One thing you can never say about the NFL is that it’s boring. First it’s the players with their multitude of misdeeds and now we even have the coaches trying to kill each other. I wonder what’s next? I imagine something akin to Celebrity Deathmatch, where team owners slug it out in a UFC style free-for-all to see who’s “right.” Way to go Tom Cable. Our word of the day: “Self-restraint.”

Convicted Murderer Pleads Not Guilty in McNair Case

Adrian J. GilliamAdrian J. Gilliam Jr, pictured right, has ben charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, an offense which carries a penalty of up to ten years and fines up to $250,000. Law enforcement officials allege that Gilliam sold the handgun that was used to murder former Houston Oilers and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair. Police believe that Sahel Kazemi purchased the gun from Gilliam and then murdered McNair before turning the gun on herself.

200px-steve_mcnair_2007-08-10Nicknamed “Air McNair,” the shooting came as a heavy blow to NFL fans everywhere as a veteran quarterback was needlessly gunned down in what officials are calling a murder suicide. His remarkable performances with both teams only serve to underscore the depth of the loss. In eleven years with the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans as a starting quarterback he led the teams to four playoffs, including playing in Super Bowl XXXIV with the Titans. He remains the Titan’s all-time leading passer.

During his short stint with the Baltimore Ravens, McNair led the Ravens to the playoffs in one of the two seasons he spent with the team. Selected to the Pro-Bowl three times, All-Pro and Co-MVP also count among his 2003 triumphs. A true football player and a true titan of the game, he remains sorely missed by all who knew him. Gilliam’s recent charges re-open the wound but may help several fans find some closure on the heels of a true tragedy.

Allen Iverson Pretends He’s the Stock Market

Allen Iverson Pretends He's the Stock MarketAlong with his stint with the Detroit Pistons Allen Iverson proved to us that he’s a lot more than just a great ball player. Apparently he’s also a primadonna and a self-interested jerk. It looks like Iverson has forgotten that most major league sports these days are TEAM-based, not “I’m the greatest”-based. Though it may sound like quite the character indictment, you’d think with a cool $20 million contract the guy could at least pretend to be coachable. I mean, at least for a while?

Now one of the NBA’s highest paid, least-wanted free agents, Iverson faces a difficult uphill battle not only against finding a team willing to take him but against a personal character that’s unwilling to concede.  We know Iverson can play ball, but the NBA isn’t doing many one-on-ones these days. Iverson needs a hell of a wake-up call to get back in the game and regain the respect he’s lost. Unfortunately he has more than just the NBA to convince. His fan base has nearly evaporated completely, leaving him in the unique position of being a great player that no one wants anything to do with.

Well, Mr. Iverson, it’s time to dig deep and do some serious soul searching. You can’t play like you’re the only player on the court. It will probably be the hardest  work he’ll ever have to do. And if he accomplishes this difficult goal it may be the greatest victory he’s ever experienced. Get ‘er done.

Pennington Returns as Skilled Leader, Visionary

Chad Pennington the Visionary

After an embarrassing play-off loss to the Baltimore Ravens last season Chad Pennington has had plenty of time to ponder his mistakes and shortcomings. The result has been an uplifting and remarkable return as a seasoned quarterback and stunning leader. Promising that nothing like that would ever happen again, the Miami Dolphins QB has returned to focus on the here and now.

Despite a flurry of reports that he’s returned only to prepare second year QB Chad Henne for the Dolphins’ future, Pennington maintains that this season, the here and now, are the most important for himself and the entire franchise. In his own words:

“What happens next year has nothing to do with now and I would hate for any of us to waste the season to wait until next year. Why not focus on this year and try to have the best year we can have and when next year comes, we’ll see what happens. I think we’re doing ourselves a disservice and we’re being disrespectful to the game when we look into the future. This game is about the now, preparing for the now, playing for the now.”

Going on to emphasize his own luck after being cut by the Jets (big deal right? Are they still in the NFL?), Pennington cited his revelation that playing this season to the best of their ability is and will remain the Dolphins’ number one focus. It’s not everyday you see a veteran quarterback return to lead a team the way it ought to be led.  This has to be one of Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano’s best decisions and best strategic moves for what promises to be an eventful and choppy NFL season.

The Hard Decision that Favre Made, for the Love of the Game

Brett Favre, a viking39 year old NFL quarterback is going it another round with a agreement between Brett Favre and none other then the Minnesota Vikings.

“I felt I did everything I possibly could do to get where I need to be,” Favre said at a news conference Tuesday. “You’re 39, your arm may not feel like it did at 21. But the pieces are in place that you don’t have to do that much and I agree with that.

“If they were willing to take that chance, I was, too.”

When your not ready to throw in the towel and still have a love and passion for the game, can you blame Favre from continuing to build on his passion.

“I don’t know how I’ll feel a year from now, five years from now, but I didn’t want to say what if.”

Too many sources and opinionated fans may try to shed light on a negative reason for Farve to want to remain in the game. If anything, at this point in his career he has not shown the loyalty that he may have once had to a particular team. He is a class act player that’s tough as nails and always fun to watch. A solid package that would have been sorely missed should he not have been a quarterback to set a standard in the game of football.

That Path has now lead him to the Minnesota Vikings.

free agent Marvin Harrison may be fighting for his FreedomMarvin Harrison has had a reportedly number of teams show interest as a prospect player after having been released by the Colts, including the Tennessee Titans.  Currently a free agent, Harrison would be hard pressed to turn down an offer to play this NFL season given the right circumstances – his main concerns remaining playing time and compensation.

However given his past and more recent troubles which involve allegations that Harrison has yet again been involved in the shooting of a man named Dwight Dixon.

Apparently Dixon was found shot multiple times and left to bleed out in the Fairmount area of Philadelphia. Dixon had already attempted to sue Harrison for a previous altercation in with Harrison had allegedly shot Dixon and lost.

J.P. Losman's Opportunity Leads to the UFLFormer Buffalo Bills starting quarterback J.P. Losman makes a jump to the Las Vegas UFL franchise on a one-year contract. Joining one of the four teams set to start the 2009 sason it is of little surprise that he would consider the opportunity after losing the starting position during the 2007 NFL season.

“I have followed J.P.’s career since his early days with Buffalo, where he impressed me with his raw talent, passing accuracy and on-field competitiveness,” Las Vegas coach Jim Fassel said. “J.P. has all the attributes of a great professional quarterback, and I am truly looking forward to working with him.”

A tough decision to some degree for his once bright future he may just be the marquee player that the UFL has been looking to find and continue to mold the competitiveness of UFL play.

The NFL Continues its Opposition to Sports Betting

NFLs opposition to sports bettingCalling for action from the US Department of Justice against Delaware’s sports lottery as Delaware is one of four states that is nationally exempt from the ban on sports gambling the NFL continues its onslaught.

With the advent of sports betting the NFL’s stance remains clear. With the common thought that sports betting could create the perception of corruption related to the games outcome. I would also point out that the NFL would not be able to regulate or obtain the proceeds from sports betting.

“sports betting threatens the integrity of the pastimes our citizens enjoy and the nature of the games they follow,” wrote Senators Orrin Hatch of Utah and Jon Kyl of Arizona.

The issue remains that in the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act that banned sports gambling, grandfathered four sates in being exempt from the law – Delaware, Nevada, Montana and Oregon.

However in this matter the senators position remains that the 1992 act did not allow for single game betting and the Delaware lottery in fact violates such legislation.
