Look Who’s Talking Now
If you like “A 6-5, 230 pound quarterback, with a laser rocket arm” maybe Peyton Manning isn’t for you…
Football scenery in Indianapolis has shifted into the apocalyptic over the past two year. The Indianapolis Colts finished the NFL season with an overall 2-14 record; giving them the proud ownership of the 1st overall pick in the NFL Draft. And it just so happens that Andrew Luck, college football’s most highly touted quarterback prospect since (Indy’s own) QB Peyton Manning, will be foregoing his senior season at Stanford, and entering the 2012 draft.
This unique situation wouldn’t be tracking proverbial substance across the ground if Manning hadn’t sustained a severe neck injury that caused him to miss the entire 2011-2012 season, and is currently putting the future of his playing career in doubt. A $28 million contract option bonus due from the Colts to Manning on March 8th would give the Colts financial justification to part ways with the QB. And the strategic advantage of drafting the young Andrew Luck could make the ”rebuilding” phase of the talent-ridden franchise all the more smooth. (Let’s be honest, all the prime-time Colt’s games last year we’re not fun to watch). Read More >>
Condemning Them to Be Free
Growing up can be an awkward phase of physical and social development. Many parents find that enrolling their children in a sport early in life can lead to a balanced improvement in a child’s physical coordination, emotional health and mental focus. The National Alliance of Sports estimates 20 million kids in America, between the ages of 5-12 years old, register to play a competitive sport every year; most in sports such as, football, baseball, basketball and soccer. And by age of 13, the N.A.S. also estimates that 70 percent of these children will end up quitting league sports all-together, and never return to league sports again.
Most adolescents cite a loss of fun as the main reason they end up quitting their sport. The sports they enrolled in earlier in their life having evolved into a more competitive atmosphere - the focus centering more on winning than general understanding and competence. And only kids showing the competitive edge, or a sense will and passion, will usually continue to pursue their sports well their mid-teens.
Occasionally, out of these ranks a young athlete will transcend the competition around him, in every sense of ability and physical development. Options narrow, and it seems the only option for the young athlete to continue to develop would be to advance to a more competitive level. In rarest of cases that means turning pro for the growing adolescents. These young athletes that turn pro are usually buffed with choice words; such as, gifted or prodigy. The societal pressure to live up to expectation becomes immense, and many of the prodigies never live up to the lofty expectations handed down on them. Read More >>
Worst Jersey Ever..? Do You Think You Could Do Better?
To be honest, when I think of the pioneering of sports jersey’s, I don’t think of the 500 different helmet, jersey and pants bottom combinations Nike has branded against Oregon Ducks. I do though get mixed feelings when I see the throwback uniforms the Memphis Grizzlies sported against the Clippers last Thursday (pictured on the right).
The Grizzlies’ retro jersey’s, and the game against the Clippers, was to be a sentiment to the old American Basketball Assosiation, 1967-1976, a “lively” league famous for its prominent red, white and blue basketball, entertaining (.. although unconventional) half-time promotions and the adoption of a three-point shot; advertised as the “home run” of basketball. If you’ve ever seen the movie, Semi-Pro, then know Will Ferrell and the Flint Michigan Tropics weren’t far from what the ABA was at the time. The league was successful enough though that Four of ABA teams eventually were adopted into the NBA: the Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets. Thursday was to be allusion to a rematch of the old Los Angeles Stars and Memphis Pros/Tams/Sounds; and yes, Memphis did change their team name 3 times in 5 years. Read More >>

Powerful Win For Thunder
Oklahoma City had one of its worst shooting nights of the NBA season. The way the Thunder played defense, hardly anyone noticed.
Except the Miami Heat, that is.
Kevin Durant scored 29 points on 12 for 21 shooting, Russell Westbrook added 18 and the Thunder frustrated Miami’s offense all night on the way to a 96-85 victory over the Heat on Wednesday night.
James Harden scored 12 points for the Thunder, who have won five straight. Oklahoma City shot just 40 percent, and had been 7-13 when connecting on less than 43 percent of its chances this season.
It didn’t matter Wednesday after holding the Heat to 38.5 percent shooting, plus having a dominating 24-10 edge in second-chance points.
Chris Bosh had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Dwyane Wade scored 21 points and LeBron James finished with 19 for the Heat, who had won three straight and were averaging 114 points in their last two games.
And the Heat were hopping mad as this one slipped away.
Miami had a chance with 3½ minutes left, Wade getting the ball in transition and the Heat down by seven. He missed a layup and contended he got fouled — replays showed he clearly had a case, with Serge Ibaka grabbing him from behind — but nothing was called.
That is, until Wade overreacted.
He slammed his hand into the padding around the basket support, an unusual display for him, and Greg Willard responded with a technical after Harden made a 3-pointer. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra earned a technical as well, Durant made one of the two free throws, and the Thunder lead was 11 with 3:11 left.
The loss reduced the almost-nonexistent margin for error Miami has in the Eastern Conference, where the No. 3 seed looks like it will be reality entering the playoffs.
The Heat (46-22) are now three games behind Chicago and Boston in the race for the No. 1 seed, but in actuality, the gap is wider than that. Chicago and Boston both are four games ahead in the loss column, plus hold tiebreakers over Miami.
Oklahoma City (44-23) stayed 3½ games ahead of Denver for No. 4 in the Western Conference.
Concussions Change Lives; & Apparently Entire NHL Games
I know from personal experience (8 life-time concussions from football, snowboarding and rugby) that concussions are nothing to mess with. The athlete never fully overcomes this life-altering injury and in terms of the NHL, the game is being negatively altered as well.
There has been a threefold increase in games lost due to concussions suffered through accidental collisions in the NHL this season, an alarming trend commissioner Gary Bettman noted before the NHL SuperSkills competition at RBC Center on Saturday.
“The ideal number of concussions would be zero,” Bettman said. “Our objective would be to come as close as possible to get that result without changing the fundamentals of our game. We are doing whatever possible to limit the amount of concussions.”
Concussions suffered in fights and through hits delivered to the body where a player’s head then strikes the glass, boards or ice have also increased this season. Bettman refused to disclose the specific numbers.
He added that the number of concussions from blindside hits to the head was down, largely due to the rule implemented last March that barred such collisions. Hits to the head deemed legal under NHL rules have also resulted in fewer man games lost, according to Bettman.
The All-Star weekend lacks arguably its biggest star in Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, who was forced to skip Sunday’s game as he recovers from a concussion likely suffered in a collision with Washington Capitals forward David Steckel in the Winter Classic on Jan. 1. Steckel was not penalized either during the game or by the league in the aftermath of that hit.
“As all hockey fans, I’m unhappy with the fact we have players who are not at the All-Star Game because of concussions,” Bettman said. “I don’t like the fact any players miss game because of concussions.”
The league’s general managers will meet in March and could propose changes in rules to further protect players.
Raiders Getting Raided, Again.
Once again the internet’s abuzz with rumors about the Oakland Raiders coaches fight on August 5 at their training camp in Napa, California. Usually it’s the players but it looks like their devoted leaders have come down to slugging it out instead. According to news reports, Oakland Raiders’ assistant coach Randy Hanson (pictured at right) was struck by Raiders’ head coach Tom Cable (pictured at left) suffering a broken jaw. Head coach Cable faces felony charges if the allegations turn out to be true.
The case was initially closed as Randy Hanson was unwilling to cooperate with police. But following his dismissal by the teams’ owner, Mr. Hanson had a sudden change of heart. Given three alternatives to being assistant coach, Hanson chose none of them and instead elected to hire an attorney. In addition, Hanson’s attorney claims the medical records will indicate that Hanson suffered the broken jaw as a result of the altercation with head coach Cable.
One thing you can never say about the NFL is that it’s boring. First it’s the players with their multitude of misdeeds and now we even have the coaches trying to kill each other. I wonder what’s next? I imagine something akin to Celebrity Deathmatch, where team owners slug it out in a UFC style free-for-all to see who’s “right.” Way to go Tom Cable. Our word of the day: “Self-restraint.”
