Tebow Might Find Title Town Closer To Home

The clock has likely struck midnight on Tebow Time.

With Peyton Manning in discussions to sign a blockbuster deal with the Denver Broncos, the NFL future of incumbent quarterback Tim Tebow is in serious doubt. The crossover football star will almost certainly be traded by the team, ridding coach John Fox and John Elway of a player whose popularity and penchant for comebacks made him an albatross on their plans to mold the franchise in their own image.

Multiple outlets report that the Broncos will try to trade Tebow once the deal with Manning is finalized. He should have no shortage of suitors. He’ll never be a Manning or a Tom Brady, but in the right system, Tebow could flourish as a change-of-pace quarterback or hybrid player. Read More >>

SU Orangemen Almosted Get Peeled In The First Round

The Syracuse Orange managed to stay out of the history books.

Syracuse narrowly avoided becoming the first No. 1 seed to lose to a 16-seed in NCAA Tournament history with a 72-65 victory over scrappy UNC Asheville on Thursday here at the Consol Energy Center.

Syracuse, which spent most of the season countering a series of scandals with win after win, finally saw the off-court controversies converge with the team’s on-court performance.

Just two days after starting center Fab Melo was declared ineligible for the NCAA Tournament, the Orange looked almost shell-shocked in its game against UNC Asheville. Read More >>

Lorenzo Romar knew what the outcome was probably going to be to the point of being bluntly realistic with those around him following Washington’s stunning loss to Oregon State in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Conference tournament.

Romar’s growing fear became truth on Sunday when Washington, the regular-season champions of the Pac-12, was left out of the 68-team field for the NCAA tournament, making the Huskies a rare footnote and trivia fact in the annals of tournament selections.

It’s the first time a regular-season champion of a traditional power-six conference  was not selected for the tournament, and the first time an outright regular-season champion or co-champion of the Pac-12, Pac-10, Pac-8 or Pacific Coast Conference failed to be chosen for the tournament since the 1950′s. The Irsay Connection

It may not be included in a Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum, but the connection between the Colt’s QB Peyton Manning – Colt’s Owner Jim Irsay situation, and the former Colt’s QB Johnny Unitas – former Colt’s Owner Bob Irsay (Jim’s father) situation is particularly uncanny. Both QB’s are NFL Hall of Famer’s (Manning universally recognized as a future HOFer), arguably the best QB’s of all time, spent the majority of the careers with the Colts, (Manning 14 seasons, Unitas 16 seasons), and were fondly remembered by the fanbase as the face (Sheriff) of the Colt’s franchise throughout their tenures.

In a way this connection is less coincidence, and closer to the old addage “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”. Both father and son owners saw an aging QB, and a promising young QB that could replace them. Read More >>

Capital One Cup: A Prize Worthy Of Distinction?

An award for the NCAA’s best collegiate athletic’s program sounds like it should be a very prestigious award; in my opinion, such an honorary award that it could only be trumped by olympic medals, and World Cup championships. When I watch the Capital One Cup commercials, and talk with my friends about the annual cup I wonder if this cup is undervalued award. The overall impression I gather, from the watching ESPN and reading sports articles, is that the cup is not gathering as much attention as the achievement it represents should deserve. Read More >>

Before their fourth Major League Soccer season even kicks off, the Seattle Sounders might play the most important match in the franchise’s young history.

While the CONCACAF Champions League doesn’t create the same interest as its counterpart in Europe, the Sounders understand just how vital success in the competition is to raising the MLS’ international profile.

“This is huge. This is what people are turning on their TV on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons to watch the Champions League from Europe, and this is the same thing. This is from our area, our confederation,” Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. Read More >>

As bad as the infamous New England Patriots’ Spygate case was in 2007, no one got hurt except teams that lost close games. Placing a bounty on opponents is far worse.

According to an NFL investigation, New Orleans Saints players were rewarded from 2009-2011 for inflicting injuries on opposing players that resulted in them being removed from a game. A knockout was supposed to reward a defender $1.500; a “cart-off” was worth $1,000.

This story couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Saints. The NFL wants to change the culture of the game by eliminating cheap shots and curtailing concussions. Retired players who suffered concussions in the NFL are suing the league. Studies continue to show how concussions cause more long-term damage than anyone in this sport realized. Read More >>

Major League Baseball expanded its playoff format to 10 teams Friday, adding a second wild card in each league.

The decision establishes a new one-game, wild-card round in each league between the teams with the best records who are not division winners, meaning a third-place team could win the World Series.

This is the only change in baseball’s playoff structure since the 1995 season, when wild-card teams were first added.

Had there been additional wild-card teams last season, the Braves would have made the playoffs in the NL, while the Boston Red Sox would have qualified in the AL. Instead, each missed the postseason by a game, both going down with historic September swoons. Read More >>

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton, political leaders and the Minnesota Vikings unveiled a proposal Thursday to build a $975 million stadium for the team in downtown Minneapolis and called for quick action on the plan before the Legislature adjourns this spring.

The plan would put the new building nearly on top of the current Metrodome site. It calls for $398 million from the state, $150 million from the city and $427 million from the Vikings for upfront construction costs.

The state’s share would come from an expansion of pulltab gambling games to add an electronic version, while Minneapolis’ share would come from redirecting the existing convention center and hospitality taxes. Read More >>

Hines Ward’s constant, ear-to-ear smile tucked behind a black facemask has been a lasting image for Pittsburgh Steelers fans the past 14 seasons.

They won’t see it again.

At least, not in a black-and-gold uniform.

The franchise’s all-time leader in just about every meaningful receiving category will be released sometime in the next two weeks said president Art Rooney II on the team’s website on Wednesday.

“We had a conversation today with Hines Ward and informed him that we plan to release him of his contract prior to the start of the 2012 NFL calendar year,” Rooney said. “Hines has been an integral part of our success since we drafted him in 1998, and we will forever be grateful for what he has helped us achieve.”

A four-time Pro Bowl selection and MVP of the 2006 Super Bowl, Ward will finish his Steelers career with 1,000 catches, 12,083 yards and 85 receiving touchdowns. He helped Pittsburgh to three AFC championships and a pair of Super Bowl wins. Read More >>
