Losman’s Opportunity Leads to the UFL
Former Buffalo Bills starting quarterback J.P. Losman makes a jump to the Las Vegas UFL franchise on a one-year contract. Joining one of the four teams set to start the 2009 sason it is of little surprise that he would consider the opportunity after losing the starting position during the 2007 NFL season.
“I have followed J.P.’s career since his early days with Buffalo, where he impressed me with his raw talent, passing accuracy and on-field competitiveness,” Las Vegas coach Jim Fassel said. “J.P. has all the attributes of a great professional quarterback, and I am truly looking forward to working with him.”
A tough decision to some degree for his once bright future he may just be the marquee player that the UFL has been looking to find and continue to mold the competitiveness of UFL play.
UFL Aims to be a Contender
The UFL kicks off this Thursday, Oct. 8th with some big ambitions, set with only four teams – New York, San Francisco, Orlando and Las Vegas and a six-game season.
The up and coming United Football League looks to attract more then just the attention of players despite some players making as little as $35,000, plus incentive bonuses, the UFL player salaries will be higher than that of the NFL.
“The model for us was one where we realize there’s an abundance of talent out there, but player costs come to nearly 70% in the NFL,” says UFL Commissioner, Michael Huyghue. “So we had to make sure to not outspend ourselves with players. The attraction with this league for those players will not be the money but the opportunity.”
Is the UFL here for the Right Reasons?
With the United Football League officially stating that they are going to try and work with the NFL. I doubt that this statement meant snatching up ex-NFL head coaches but where you may fail another opportunity may just present itself. A league that lives by anything but a modest modo, “Where The Future Stars Come to Play!” just so happens to be formulating in the worst economic times in 70 years.
Set with a 3 year plan and set to strive against the signs of the times, a motivational factor may very well be the allstar list of investors willing to gamble.
But to me this gamble really does ask the question of whether or not the NFL needed such a change. From my couch the NFL does not seem to be chalk full of MLB scandals, or loosing the appeal of the foul drawing NBA.
