MLB Uniform History – Stockings

MLB StockingsAside from the advent of the Boston Red Stockings first introducing the knickerbockers and showcasing their red stockings as a part of their baseball uniform stockings took drastic changes in look. Styles through out the 1900′s included diamonds and stripped stockings ranging in color combination as well as stirrups intended to create distinction from NFL uniforms.

Stockings also aided in spawning some ball club names because of the distinct changes to their uniform and focus on the look of their stockings including the Red and White Stockings as well as the Detroit Tigers as they were nicknamed since somewhere around 1895 becuase of the stripped stockings they wore but would not enter their first major league game until 1901.

Josh HowardIt is always nice to know that an entire league can still get called out in regards to ‘illegal’ drug use. No honor among thieves, a fool and his money are soon parted, and candor is not necessarily a valuable quality when you are admitting what no one wants to their ‘role models’ doing.

Apparently Josh Howard thought he was in confession on Michael Irvine’s radio show admitting that he smokes dope, regularly, off-season. If this wasn’t enough to have listeners at full attention he openly decided to be the poster boy that implicated the entire NBA league with regards to marijuana use. I guess he did not get the memo. We all ‘know’ but an assumption is one thing. I found the following bets posted from BetUs.com and thought it was too great not to share.

A-RodI might be antagonistic to certain sports in general based on players, years past, and a certain lack of respect for pansies but baseball just does not seem to be a sport that I can rationalize being injured.

A-Rod’s recent decision to site out on todays game against the Detroit Tigers because of an ‘aggravated’ quad seems a little trivial especially compared to the statement he made about getting healthy and he wants to be ‘close to 100 percent’ when he gets back out there.

I loved playing the sport of baseball but have no respect for premedona injury, like Shaq’s stubbed toe, but it just may have to be attributed to his other passion…modeling. Knuckle up, real athletes play football.

customized kids jerseyFrom being born to being introduced and groomed for the gridiron, mound, or hardwood it is certainly better to give then to receive. But what better way is there in teaching life’s valuable lessons of study, preparation, perseverance and dedication then in rooting for the home team. Perhaps there is a certain fondness, a remembrance that inspires those favorite colors in growing up as a kid. The next outing to the grocery store this kid is sure to flaunt his loyalty proud from isle to isle with disregard for any reluctance, as their custom kids jersey boast proudly, ‘you know the name, and you know the team. Collarless MLB jerseysNow long gone they days of the pull over fold down collared shirts with a front laced or buttoned jersey but in 1906, the New York Giants became the first team to play without collared MLB jerseys.

It had been nearly a sixty year tradition by then of wearing collared jerseys that resembled something along the lines of a bankers’ outfit. But after this debut by the Giants the Major League players were finally freed from the eternal annoyance of the collared shirt.

During the 1906 Giants season that was rocked by an earthquake the New York Giants strove to a 96 game winning record.

Ridding the Yankees Curse

Yankees CurseBuried under 2 feet of concrete, a ploy to jinx the New York Yankees was uncovered and removed from the new site of the Bronx Yankees stadium. The Boston Red Sox jersey bearing David Ortiz No. 34 was planted in a service corridor behind the restaurant for the new stadium reportedly set to open next year.

Anonymous tips, charities and possible criminal charges aside, the long time Red Sox fan was originally reluctant to work on the Yankees stadium. In staying true to his Boston roots and not set foot or participate in the construction of the stadium, rivalries dying hard and all, he decided to facilitate a curse by placing the Red Sox jersey and only working a single day on the stadium construction project.

Known as jerseygate, the stadium jinx certainly brings a certain much needed laughter to the recent years MLB game. Perhaps fans will ban together and support the Gino Castignoli Red Sox nation cause by wearing Castignoli jerseys all season, it’s rally time in Boston if you ask me.

Cincinnati Red Stockings - Knickers

During baseball’s formative era of the 19th century, the 1868 Cincinnati Red Stockings were not only the first publicly announced professional team and became the first team to wear knickers as a part of the baseball uniform rather than pants spawning a major change in the baseball uniform. This was then considered revealing by players and fans, but the new stockings and short knickers quickly caught on and was embraced by ballplayers. The new look spawned the teams nickname ‘Red Stockings’ and established the color of Cincinnati marking an important point in baseball history with influences on the Boston Red Sox and Braves as well.
