Michael Jordon
Micheal Jordan is to Generation X what Joe Dimaggio was to baby boomers. He presented a changing era, and exuded confidence in what we all assumed to be the best things in life. His play on the court reflects who he was off the court and what he did on the court was nothing short of spectacular. Jordan’s career in basketball is unrivaled.
After his three-peat, retirement and second three-peat, Jordan has proven that he is in fact the greatest basketball player to ever exist. His basketball style changed the game forever and those effects can be seen in how people play the game today. You can still see Jordan NBA jerseys amongst the Lebron’s and Bryant’s.
Joe DiMaggio
Joe DiMaggio, or Joltin’ Joe, is considered to be one of the best baseball players to have ever existed. He had an amazing career batting average at .579 which is the 6th best in history. He was known for his homeruns, daring base running as well as his great defensive maneuvers. His 56 game hitting streak is considered one of the baseballs finest moments. In 1969, Joe Dimaggio was voted the world’s best living baseball player.
But more than his incredible play on the field was DiMaggio as a symbol of American virtue. Today we honor the man and the myth. His MLB jerseys are still walking the streets to this day by people who still feel Joltin’ Joes presence.
A New Feeling For Favre
With Favre’s same role on a new team, it certainly going to be a closely watched subject in the NFL this season. With so many opinions stemming from what transpired for the veteran players trade to a new team. So far things seem to be coming together well as Favre continues to find his groove and most importantly Favre needs to feel at home with new personnel.
There will certainly be a transition seeing the former Green Bay quarterback in his new Favre Jets Jersey after being accustomed for so many years to his Green Bay attire. Green Bay had become synonymous with Favre. “It was like starting all over again,” Favre said. “I had some feelings I haven’t felt in 17 years. It was a little weird. For the most part, I felt comfortable in this uniform. I had a number of people, mostly in Redskins uniforms, saying it don’t look right. It’s going to start looking right. It was a little awkward, but I knew we had to get through that.”
Since just 5 months ago Favre had done little in regards to quarterback training as his sites were set on retirement. Favre even commented to this affect as the unfortunate loss Redskins to the came to a close, “Ten days ago, I was doing yard work. I’d be lying if I said I felt perfect out there. I wanted to get this game over with. It was a positive anxiety, a positive nervousness. It’s better than not having any feeling at all.”
Although it is pre-season and Favre’s role is going to be limited he appeared crisp. There is undoubtedly a lot to accomplish in a short amount of time and this type of transition takes work and repetition but in the coming weeks a lot will become clear in the controversial outcome for football’s ironman.
MLB Team Nicknames
Anaheim-Los Angeles Angels
The Angels obtained their nickname after moving into the American League in 1960 to their home of Los Angeles, the City of Angels.
Baltimore Orioles
Many other minor league clubs have been known as the Orioles as well, but after moving from St. Louis the Browns were named after the state bird of Maryland.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox originally named the Somersets after the club owner had a number of other nicknames throughout their MLB career including the Puritans, Pilgrims and Plymouth Rocks. Finally in 1907 they became the Red Sox after an obvious stocking uniform change.
Chicago White Sox
Originally referred to as the white stockings the Chicago team later changed its name to the White Sox to prevent confusion with a previous team of the same name in the National League.
Cleveland Indians
In the 1890s the Cleveland Indians began as the Spiders, then called the Blues, as well as the Babe or Broncos near the turn of the century. Also named after Napoleon Lajoie after becoming manager they were referred to as the Naps as well as the Molly McGuires after manager Jim McGuire in 1909. Then in 1915 the finalized version of the team name was decidedly the Indians after a newspaper poll was held and the then star of the team, a Penobscot Indian helped influence the voters decisions.
Detroit Tiger
The Detroit Tigers are appropriately named after the stripped stockings the wore.
Kansas City Royals
Elected by fans the Kansas City Royals were named after the famous Americal Royal Livestock and Horse Show held in Kansas City.
Minnesota Twins
Originally the Washington Senators the Minnesota Twins were names after the city in which the reside after moving to the Twin Cities in 1960.
Sports Role Models – Dock Ellis LSD No Hitter
Former Pittsburgh Pirates‘ pitcher admitted to being under the influence of LSD during his 1970 no hitter against the San Diego Padres. Evidentelly he new just hours before he was going to pitch, having thought he had the day off his girlfriend and trip partner soon realized he was going to be pitching later that afternoon.
The Pirates ended up winning the game 2-0 despite Ellis having walked eight batters and hit a few. It was undeniably a highpoint in his baseball career and it may be stated that it is a high point yet to be outdone in great sports achievements. Ellis had long since been known for his intolerance for slights and questioned racism in the sport of baseball. Despite his overall control issues that game in trying to maintain his no hitting streak within the game after fathoming the thought in just the fourth inning.
MLB Scouts Skim off the Top
The media over the years hasn’t left any scandal unsung in the world of sports and the MLB has certainly been at the forefront. But it now appears that employees of the MLB franchises may actually be ripping of the MLB. Sources are beginning to leak another possible major league baseball scandal with huge potential. Said to outweigh steriods in baseball or referees betting on games they officiate – even dog fighting and slaying but upon review it appears that the league is the one being scammed.
The scandal involves MLB scouts and how they handle the business of signing potential talent and ESPN reported that this could involve as many as 20 people and more than a dozen ball clubs in which scouts and perhaps officials have been signing Latin America players with inflated salaries and then skimming funds from the players signing bonuses. The scandal seems to have stemmed from White Sox Director of Scouting, David Wilder, whom after being caught trying to smuggle 40 thousand in cash from the Dominican into Miami gave enough details to stem the investigation.
Although the MLB does overall seem to be involved on some level or another, the individuals involved actually seem to be stealing from the teams themselves. Apparently scouts have been over evaluating prospects and forcing a cut of the players money, which begs to ask the question of, where are the checks and balances? Although this scandal is well over a month old with the apparent information that David Wilder has uncovered it appears that the investigation is increasing in the sheer number of those involved.
No Baseball in Olympics 2012
The MLB’s integration into the Olympics will certainly be a great way to expand upon the world popularity of the sport of baseball but for now aside from the IBAF, OIC and MLB are merely working on a system which will allow players to participate in Olympic baseball. For now it has already been announced that the International Olympic Committee has dropped both baseball and softball from the 2012 Summer Games being held in London and would have to be voted upon in order to have the games held in the future.
With that being said, it is the first time since polo in 1936 that a sport has been eliminated from the Olympic games. In trying to get to the bottom of the decision it is apparent that it was a one sided decision that may have to do with the MLB not allowing players to participate because of All Star Game conflicts but it seems that there would be more to the decision as this was the case in past years.
With this decision it can be easily stated that the ones truly affected are fans of the sport. The issue of stricter World Anti-Doping Agency rules even came up in discussions about the recent decision by the OIC and perhaps why the MLB may be refusing to free up their ballplayers. Ultimately it came down to a final decision and both sports will not be present and current hopes are only set on ensuring the games make their return in 2016 at this point.
Dangerous Maple
With the recent advent of sports etiquette being addressed by the NFL it was interesting to note that the original controversy brought on with injuries and potentially harmful flying maple bat fragments. Despite the urgency of this issue there had been no promise that any steps would be implemented or even proposed this season. Perhaps they hired a probability coach and the possibility / cost of a lawsuit did not outweigh the implementation cost of said netting and precautionary measures.
Most would agree that the most viable solution for the time being should easily be the ban of Maple bats. Primadona MLB players can certainly utilize another bat for the safety of the fans that are attending their games. At least until the quality of bats or improved specifications can be established, or extended netting to protect fans, a ban on Maple bats is the least the committee could do to hasten the process.
Brett Favre’s Decision has been Made…
But was the decision made for him as not to long after Favre’s reinstatement from retirement he has officially been traded to the New York Jets for a conditional fourth-round pick. However, significant improvements have already been put into place for the Jets lineup with significant players such as Alan Faneca, outside linebacker Calvin Pace and nose tackle Kris Jenkins.
Tampa had lost out on its offer being too low for Green Bay to consider and even though the Mississippi native seemingly would have been a better fit with the Buccaneers he decidedly signed off on the Jets trade. Favre was said to have a great chance at regaining his starting position if he would have refused to speak with other teams but after a lengthy conversation with McCarthy Farve agreed to speak with both the Jets and Bucs. The Decades Worst MLB Trades Countdown – #10
On July 19th of 2000 the Texas Rangers traded Esteban Loaiza to the Toronto Blue Jays for Darwin Cubillan and Michael Young. This trade resulted in essentially two mistakes when contracting this trade for Loaiza by the Blue Jays. The first was trading him for a future stud short stop, Michael Young and the second was in letting Loaiza go to the Chicago White Sox where he won 21 games where he improved to well over triple his strikeouts and split his ERA. The Rangers came out of the trade with a five-time All-Star and career .300 hitter for a pitcher that the Blue Jays eventually did not capitalize on.
