Bud Selig steps into Athletics’ staduim negotiationsA’s owner, Lew Wolff again supported San Jose as new home for his MLB team but as the Oakland A’s have continued to struggle with its stadium dealings it was announced by the Major League Baseball Commissioner, Bud Selig, that a panel of ‘stadium experts’ would assist in the teams stadium search.

Declining to comment Wolf had told reporters that San Jose would be prime real estate, with an already approved stadium but did comment on the announcement of an assigned panel, “Ultimately it has to be determined by baseball, not by me.”

Issues have continued to surface as Wolf explored San Jose once before because of concerns taht the staduim would overlap San Francisco Giants’ territory.

“The A’s cannot and will not continue indefinitely in their current situation.” said MLB commissioner, Bud Selig.

Seattle Shows Promise, But Still Stinks

seahawksjerseystatupu-onthefield.jpgThe Seahawks have been a dominant force in a weak NFC west division for the last several years.  But with the amazing performance of the Arizona Cardinals in 2008, Seattle will have to step up its game to maintain a presence in the playoffs.  Seattle recently acquired T.J. Houshmanzadeh from Tampa Bay, who is sure to add offense to a team that failed to score much at all in 2008.  But Seattle still has one central problem, their quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck, dominates weak defensive lines, but can’t handle the pressure of a strong defensive line.

When viewing a Seahawks game versus a weaker team, you will find Hasselbeck a dominant offensive force.  When the Seahawks face a team on their level or better, Hasselbeck plays some of the worst games of his life.  He started as a backup quarterback to Brett Favre, and even as Favre grows older, on most regular days Favre is still better than Hasselbeck on his best.  While Qwest Field will be filled to the brim with fans sporting Seahawks jerseys, the team has little hope of success until they address their most blatant issue.

Are the Seahawks making the right moves?

mike holmgren waving farewell to seahawks fansWith the 2009 NFL coming up pretty soon I am happy with what the Seattle Seahawks have done so far to improve on the areas they were not very good at last year. I am just not sure who they should draft with the #4 pick.

If you make a mistake your stuck paying that player a lot of money for the next couple years. So they already added a good WR and a DL. Rather they should be looking to draft on the defensive side of the ball, scouting to find solid prospects that are available for defensive positions or even an offensive linemen.

Whatever they choose they need to think about having that player solidifying that position for the next 10 years. I am not the GM for the Seahawks but this upcoming draft is going to say a lot for where this team is going in the future.

The Cactus League game Thursday with the Mariners Sidney Ponson will be judged by the Royals watching him play against the big boys, Triple-A team, Seattle Mariners.  Ponson already gave the Mariners a run for their money zipping through five innings with just 49 pitches. He gave up one run, on a homer.

Sidney Ponson Texas Rangers

Manager Trey Hillman said,  “He’s already stretched out to 75, 80 pitches, and he’s going to compete for a starting job the same way four or five other guys are, and we’ll see where that falls.  Those others include Brandon Duckworth, Robinson Tejeda and Heath Phillips.

The Aruban right-hander reported to camp on a MLB deal,  ready for a new chance.  “Yeah, I signed a Minor League contract,” he said. “They told me straight up, nothing is for sure.” Ponson on The Netherlands team surprised the baseball world by twice defeating a loaded Dominican Republic team in the Classic.

Pitching last season for the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees he had faced the Royals before and came away impressed stating: “I pitched against this team last year, and it’s not easy,” Ponson said. “It’s not like in the past when you come to KC, and you say, ‘Oh, it’s KC, you can take it easy.’

He is a competitive player both in the present and the past, so what might he add to the Kansas Royals?  Maybe some more scrapes and controversies to heat things up.

Cole HamelsCole Hamels the Philadelphia Phillies Ace Pitcher threw one hit and one walk and struck out five, with 3 2/3 scoreless innings in a Minor League Spring Training game Tuesday at Carpenter Complex.  Hamels remains on schedule to pitch in April against the Rockies in Denver.  Hamels fast ball estimated at 82 to 86 mph showing an increase in his velocity, his typical fastball in 90 to 92 mph but he is recuperating from the inflammation injection into his left elbow of March 17.

“If I’m able to jump in line with our four guys and be the fifth guy, the fourth, third, second — I don’t care,” Hamels said. “It’s just knowing that after the season starts, we’re on that schedule. Knowing that I’m going to go out there every five days and my teammates know that I’m going to go and be healthy, that’s really all that they can really ask for.”

Pitching coach, Rich Dubee hasn’t announced the Opening night pitcher but is encouraged by the improvement stating: “He’s always been a slow starter,” Dubee said. “Even before he got the injection, his velocity was starting to come up a little bit. This is a couple more notches up, which is good to see.”

“[Wednesday] will be the tell-tale story, how he responds after pitching today,” Dubee said. “But today was definitely a positive.”

Can Two Broncos Settle What’s What?

jay cutler poutingJay Cutler may have came across wrong in appearing to want to have input in recent decisions made by Broncos’ administration and as a quarterback, a barely above average quarterback at that, it just would not be his place.

Many reports of recent incidents place the numbers at the forefront of this argument against Cutler’s actions stating that his stats as a starter for the Denver Broncos speak for themselves. These past three years he as achieved a record of 17-20 with 54 TDs with 37 interceptions leaving him with a passer rating of just 87.1.

Cutler, who turns 26 next month still has much to learn and being humble is something that very well could benefit this hopeful prodigy. But Cutler may be misrepresented in these recent occurrences by media.

Former NFL quarterback turned CBS analyst, Rich Gannon recently added his thoughts on Cutler, “He’s one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the league. Is he a top five guy? Probably not.”

It started with Cutler’s disagrement in firing once head coach of the Broncos Mike Shanahan. This can certainly create some unease. Cutler was then reportedly told that the entire offensive staff would stay intact, yet Jeremy Bates was later released as well.

Broncos head coach, Josh McDaniels, later stated, “I don’t recall having that conversation with Jay.”

Cubs Jersey 31 Retired

Cubs to Retire 31 TwiceThe Cubs number 31 jersey will be the fifth number retired by the team in honor of the two pitchers, one a Hall of Famer, the other a future Cooperstown resident Ferguson Jenkins and Greg Maddux.

Maddux was the first to wear number 31 since Jenkins left the Cubs,  pretty nice for Maddux since Fergie is one of the best pitchers to ever play for the Cubs.  Maddux stated,  “It was an honor to have his number.”  Jenkins still holds the club’s strikeout record with 2,038 and Maddux has two milestones with the team, earning his 300th career win in a Cubs jersey on August 7th, 2004, and his career 3,000 strikeout on July 26, 2005.

“The No. 31 belongs to two of the greatest pitchers ever to wear a Cubs uniform,” team chairman Crane Kenney said. “Ferguson Jenkins and Greg Maddux each established themselves as dominant pitchers of their era. Each won his first Cy Young Award with the Chicago Cubs and represented our team with dignity and class on and off the field.”

Maddux could be looking up the flags on the foul poles at Wrigley Field and someday see himself with Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo and Ryne Sandberg.

Cubs star Derrek Lee

Cubs Lou PineillaDerrek Lee and DeRosa were the only Cubs hitting in the playoffs last year according to fans who corrected articles being written about his Spring Training stats.  In 2005, Lee hit .318 in April, in 2007 it was .392, and last year, .371.

Lou Piniella wants to see more offense from these big boys in the Chicago Cubs lineup.  The first baseman, Derek Lee was batting at .179 this Spring.   Lee is being watched as his home run and RBI numbers have dropped the last two years, and because fans see Micah Hoffpauir batting .288 this Spring. “I’ve been doing this a long time,” Lee said. “I don’t put a lot of weight on my results in Spring Training. I know what I’m capable of doing in the season. I’ll be OK.”

Lee seems to have a whatever attitude about it because it is only Spring training but it would be nice to see that swagger back.
