Andrew Miller Marlins lossWith an MLB best record of 11-1 the Florida Marlins have seen some bullpen action this season bringing them straight out of jams and into a stellar start, setting a seven game winning streak and franchise record.

“It’s not just one guy getting the job done. Multiple people are capable of getting the job done,” said Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla. “It’s not always going to be the guys you think its going to be.”

The winning streak finally dampered by the Pittsburgh Pirates but with as many comebacks as the Florida Marlins have already had this season their hopes still have to be looking on continuing the great record they have begun.

proper farewell to John Madden

With the retiring of a legend, former player, Raiders head coach and long time NFL sports announcer, John Madden is in fact the most influential announcer in the history of sports.

Long gone will be his one liners and insightful points on the game of football. So who will be next to climb up the announcing ladder after 30 years of Boom, Boom, Boom play calling.

After all we still have the punchlines to look forward to as Madden’s reigning football video game staple lives on. Irreplaceable? Probably not. But will he be missed. Probably well after you forget all about the plain as day play calling.

Detroit Tigers Galarraga Out Pitches the Sox

Armando Galarraga Detroit Tigers Future CloserArmando Galarraga spotted his pitches low and on the corner for the previous 6 1/3 innings making the bigger addition to the Wednesday 9-0 Tigers win.  He may be Detroit’s future closer but some of his wild pitches nearly hit many players heating up the shouting on the field.

Ryan Perry, the wild pitcher,  nearly hit Alexi Ramirez twice and Brent Lillbridge another time.  Josh Fields, Chicago’s third baseman,  shouted to Perry about throwing the ball at him at 97 mph.  “I’ve never tried to hit anyone in the head,” Perry said.  Perry held in and struck out Fields for the final out.

It was a win for the Detroit Tigers, taking the early lead in American League Central Standings.   Galarraga has good control and shut down Chicago’s big bats.  Considering this was the only time he faced the White Sox before this game was briefly at this final game of last season.  He threw a few wold pitches to bring in the tying run and walked Jermaine Dye, he was out of sorts.

Galarraga had the eight-strikeout performance in the home opener las Friday,  with three of his five strikouts coming in critical situations.  Galarraga set down Carlos Quentine and changed speeds on Jim Thome with a moving changeup and a cutter to freeze him.

Executing a heavy dose of sliders and cutters Garlarraga controlled the game very well.

Tim Wakefield the Red Sox knuckleballer came five outs away from a no hitter in his 402nd major league start.  Pitching the Boston Red Sox 8-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics.  Wakefield has been with the Red Sox since 1995, longer than any other member of the team.

The first 15 batters were retired and after six innings, the righty had thrown 54 pitches, 42 for strikes.  Wakefield has given the Red Sox no-hitters in three successive seasons.

The Red Sox were coming off a 12-inning loss that had the bullpen in the blues.  The Red Sox were 2-6, which was the worst start since 1996.

Will this magic continue for Wakefield’s MLB career and the Red Sox?

Cracking Down on

Eduardo da Silva leg breakingMLS is heating up as more and more red cards come flying out. Saturdays Los Angeles Chivas game included three red cards, 6 yellows and a total of 31 fouls as the referee steadily had to regulate the Chivas game.

Certain instances have arose where players such as Borman slide tackles cleats first but doesn’t connect on what could be a vicious collision.

There cannot be a suitable explanation for tackling like this so professionals may very well need to be held accountable for as much as their approach to slide tackling. The last thing the Major League Soccer wants is a Eduardo da Silva style incident.

Looking into everything from coming down hard on players to stricter officiating may be necessary and the coming weeks are sure to tell where this is going to lead as either players or the MLS officils are going to have to step in. The MLS surely does not want to be considered a hack league as it tries to build a possible world wide fan base caused by reckless fouling.

2009 Draft: Who Goes Where?

detroit lions fan wearing fire millen shirtWith the draft fast approaching in just a few weeks, NFL fans around the world are wondering who will nab the top prospects and how teams will look for the upcoming year.  Following their record breaking 0-16 season (not the kind of record one would want to break), the Detroit Lions are at the top of the draft, and it seems a near certainty that their selection will be a quarterback to build their franchise around.  Whether it’s Matthew Stafford or Mark Sanchez, the Lions are tightlipped about their pick.  It’s even been speculated that the Lions might seek to sign a veteran quarterback and use their #1 pick to draft another position.  Following the Detroit Lions in the draft are the St. Louis Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, and Seattle Seahawks, all of which had terrible seasons in 2008.  Amongst these three, the Kansas City Chiefs are the only franchise that has a reliable quarterback, so it could be that Stafford or Sanchez wind up with one of these teams as well.

Following the first four, it’s not quite clear who will end up where, though it is expected both Stafford and Sanchez will have a home within the first 10 picks.  Some of the other hot prospects include Wide Receiver Michael Crabtree, Offensive Tackle Eugene Monroe, and Running Back Knowshon Moreno.

Just when you were hoping that social media was going to take off you realize that your once all too personal life now requires an alias online. popular in many professional circles background checks may very well entail checking up on an applicants Facebook or other online profiles.

Not really a big deal for those who already know to use aliases so their girl can’t check up on all their sleazy free time activities. Apparently some just have to learn the hard way.

One question, where does it stop?

The Same Old Now Show for the TO Show

Terrell Owens no showSome just have to have their hand held or forced to show face. Any team taking on such a player by now would know the situation they are getting themselves into, especially this far into Terrell Owens all for none career.

As Owens has so eloquently stated, “What I find so unfair is that I’m not the only guy out of 32 teams that didn’t show up, That’s what’s so frustrating about the whole thing.”

And to that affect and what was previously stated. Give it a rest. Acquired as a free agent last month the Buffalo Bills unquestionably knew what they were dealing with – Owens, “No worries,” attitude.

You can’t help but notice that he hates to be called out in this case, but loves the spotlight all the same. Enough said and moving on.

Make or Break MLB Ticket Pricing

2009 New Yankees stadium

5.4 percent increase in ticket prices, but this increase is mostly due to the Yankees and Mets new stadiums. MLB Commissioner, Bud Selig, had warned teams last October in consideration for their 2009 ticket pricing and the Yankees may have wished they listened after opening their $1.5-billion ballpark this year.

“I think if anybody in any business had known where this economy was going to go, they would have done things differently,” Co-owner Hal Steinbrenner admitted.

But these changes are affecting more then just fans and what they have to fork over simply to see the new Yankees stadium. Local businesses in Upstate New York are in fact being forced to up their process as well increasing the bottom line across the board when looking to catch a game.

Ichiro Suzuki injurySeattle Mariners star Ichiro got some action on Wednesday morning for the first time in more than two weeks and will see some game action on Thursday afternoon, with the game plan for him to get at least four at-bats.

Ichiro started his ninth Major League season on the 15-day disabled list, the first time in his career that he missed more than five games in any one season.  Due to the effects of a bleeding ulcer he has not been eligible to come off the DL next Wednesday.  Results of his recent blood tests are improving allowing for some game action.

“I don’t think he’s at 100 percent yet, but he’s close,” Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said prior to Wednesday night’s game against the Twins. “Everything is improving and we will plan on him being the designated hitter in [an extended spring training] game tomorrow.  “He had a 75-pitch batting practice today and hit 20 home runs,” the manager said.

The Mariners also received good medical news on right-hander Felix Hernandez who twisted his right ankel during the first inning of Monday nights regular season opener.  Hernandez has improved and was able to make his regular bullpen session on Wednesday.
