Spring Debut Hitless for Ken Griffey Jr.
Hitless in his first two plate appearances as a designated hitter Ken Griffey Jr. was all smiles during his second Mariners debut. He walked and flied out during his first game back in a Mariners uniform. The 39 year old Griffey once again sported the No. 24 Griffey Mariners jersey.
Griffey is baseball’s leading active home run hitter, with Seattle hoping this will energize the Seattle fans. Griffey said that if the team can get into the habit of doing the little things, like moving runners over and scoring runs with two outs, “big things will happen.”
While Griffey does not feel he is the big story he downplayed the significance of his contribution during the Mariners exhibition loss against Austrailia’s World Baseball Classic team in Peioria Stadium. Despite the three home run effort by fellow Mariners the game ended in an 11-9 loss and directed the focus off his return. He waled on a full-count pitch from Aussie left-hander Travis Backley reaching third base before the inning ended. In the second inning swinging at the first pitch with a fly ball for the final out.
