Bud Selig’s Proposed Drug Suspension Change
With the advent of the recent events including Manny Ramirez suspension turned MLB minors training camp shed some light on MLB commissioner Bud Selig’s feeling on the current drug suspension rulings.
“It’s a negotiated solution, but to be candid, I believe that should be changed,’’ Selig said. “Their logic was OK — look, guys get hurt, they can go out on rehab, and so and so forth. But I think that’s something we need to really change in the next labor negotiation.”
Manny Ramírez, who recently served a 50-game suspension for having a prescription for a banned female fertility drug that hides the effects of steroids.
Selig was against the decision to allow Ramírez to play 10 minor-league rehab games before returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers after his suspension. It is a just arguement that does stem around some similair issues that are already going to be raised but still adds yet another stipulation on the upcoming labor negotiations already believed to be on thin ice.
Selig did however – also – point out the fact that once he had served his punishment Ramírez was welcomed back by fans.
“It’s an interesting reaction because I think it surprises a lot of people, the positiveness of it,” he said. “But you always get back to fans: They want their team to win. And this player has now been disciplined. He’s back. They’re in first place. He can help them win. And I think that’s what you’re seeing there.”

Bud Selig isn’t independent – never has been, never will be and never SHOULD be. The idea of an independent, Judge Landis-style Commissioner evaporated with Fay Vincent. The players have Donald Fehr, the owners have Selig. The fact is, Selig is doing EXACTLY what he’s supposed to: whatever’s best for the owners. Any consideration for the game is secondary. But they should quit calling him “Commissioner” and start calling him “Owner Rep” so everyone knows what his job really is. It’s stunning to see so many people blame Selig while letting Fehr off the hook. Selig has it right: the union threatened to strike when the owners said they wanted drug testing. I’ve always blamed Donald Fehr for this mess because, without him, A-Rod and Bonds (and others) never get the chance to do PED’s (they started well after 1995). But the Owners absolutely turned a blind eye because the cancellation of the World Series hurt and they needed to regain lost ground and $$. Sure, it’s easy for Selig to say they didn’t know, but they weren’t looking either because they didn’t WANT to know. It’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell all over again.
