Bud Selig isn’t independent - never has been, never will be and never SHOULD be. The idea of an independent, Judge Landis-style Commissioner evaporated with Fay Vincent. The players have Donald Fehr, the owners have Selig. The fact is, Selig is doing EXACTLY what he’s supposed to: whatever’s best for the owners. Any consideration for the game is secondary. But they should quit calling him “Commissioner” and start calling him “Owner Rep” so everyone knows what his job really is. It’s stunning to see so many people blame Selig while letting Fehr off the hook. Selig has it right: the union threatened to strike when the owners said they wanted drug testing. I’ve always blamed Donald Fehr for this mess because, without him, A-Rod and Bonds (and others) never get the chance to do PED’s (they started well after 1995). But the Owners absolutely turned a blind eye because the cancellation of the World Series hurt and they needed to regain lost ground and $$. Sure, it’s easy for Selig to say they didn’t know, but they weren’t looking either because they didn’t WANT to know. It's Don't Ask, Don't Tell all over again.
