There’s Pressure In Being Perfect

Undoubtedly the call by official Ed Hochuli had a deciding impact on the outcome of the Chargers – Broncos game. Even though it was decidedly determined a fumble an incomplete pass blown dead by referee whistle cannot be overruled. Even highly respected referees can be looked at with some criticism at the advent of a botched call and with the league’s competition committee, controversial calls can be looked at and reviewed at the end of the season. And much like the call by Hochuli that caused the San Diego Chargers loss, referees have much at stake during questionable calls including their participation in Post season games or even whether or not they are retained next season.
Although I had not noticed any announcement that the NFL may be looking into this process as an inadvertent whistle can and has impacted games both past and present. And even though this recent happening was something that Hochuli admitted he knew was a mistake was something that could not be corrected because of the official NFL rule.
One thing that I feel is an apparent consideration in any modification or added reviewable call, play or otherwise is the fact that these types of halts to the game affect so much more. The tempo of football has slowed in recent years and other key aspects such as the rhythm of the game. This is not reality TV with all of the over dramatization and long pauses to build suspense. The suspense is in the game.
