Oakland Selects Heyward-Bey Over Crabtree

One of the most surprising picks in the 2009 draft was Oakland’s selection of Darius Heyward-Bey over other top rated receivers with their #7 pick. Critics around the NFL scratched their heads as Oakland selected Heyward-Bey over Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin; the two wide receivers thought to be the best available in the draft. Heyward-Bey, despite not having the experience or numbers of the other two receivers, does have one solid attribute: speed. Darius ran the 40-yard dash at a time just above 4.2 seconds, which was the fastest at the scouting combine. The Raiders believe that Heyward-Bey is their man because he will be able to outrun the defense and allow JaMarcus Russell, the Raider’s QB, to utilize his rocket arm.
However, fans in Oakland and around the NFL are wondering if the Raiders made a mistake with not selecting the more solidified WR in Michael Crabtree, who most believed would go first in the draft. Time will tell whether fans will be wearing their Heyward-Bey Oakland Raiders jerseys with pride, or looking over to San Francisco on the other side of the bay and wondering why their Raiders jerseys don’t say Crabtree.
