2009: Falcons Become Super Bowl Contenders

Falcons Matt RyanIn 2008, Matt Ryan broke the mold, becoming a rookie QB who took his team to the playoffs in his first year and lead the Falcons to an 11-5 record during the normal season.  Ryan shrugged off some of the most powerful defenses in the NFL, and performed better than many of the most well recognized veteran QBs from around the league.  Now as the 2009 season is slated to start in just four months, the Falcons have made some significant moves in the offseason to become true Super Bowl contenders.  While Matt Ryan amazed and astounded in 2008, as a Sophomore in 2009, expect him to bring down the house.  The main reason Ryan will dominate other teams in 2009 is the addition of TE Tony Gonzalez, a future Hall of Famer and the former franchise face of the Kansas City Chiefs.  Tony Gonzalez is 33 years old, but still managed to post over 1,000 yards receiving in 2008, and is more dominant on offense than most WRs.  Standing at 6’5 and weighing in at 251 pounds, Gonzalez is big enough to stop a DE and then turn around and catch a pass for a first down.

The Falcons already have Pro Bowl RB Michael Turner, and Pro Bowl WR Roddy White on their offense.  With the addition of Gonzalez, the Falcons have a tandem offense with enough explosive power to rival even the receiving core of the Arizona Cardinals with Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston.  With a young QB, that offense is even more dangerous.  Expect fans wearing their Falcons jerseys featuring Gonzalez on the back with pride as the Atlanta Falcons dominate in ’09.
