Winds of Change Blowing in the NFC West
The NFC West has been a week division for the last decade, often with just one team being a real competitor in the playoffs. However, three of the four teams in the NFC West have been to the Super Bowl in the last decade (Arizona, Seattle, St. Louis), and one team (St. Louis) won it. The NFC West doesn’t have weak teams, but it does have teams that are inconsistent. The Seahawks have been the dominant force in the division for some time, as fans wearing Seahawks NFL jerseys became commonplace in the playoffs. However, the Seahawks didn’t do well at all in 2008, and the Cardinals, with their near unstoppable offense, are now a real competitor.
It’s no longer accepted that the Seahawks will make their regular playoff appearance. In addition, the St. Louis Rams, under new head coach Steve Spagnuolo, while not much of a threat in 2009, will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming seasons. The 49ers also have a chance to push into the playoffs under new head coach Mike Singletary, who has first hand NFL experience and a demeanor that demands respect from coaches and players. In 2009, it’s a bit of a toss up who winds up winning the division.
The NFC West teams all had successful drafts, managing to pick up some of the best candidates available. With a roster of young players and changes at the helm, the NFC West looks to be a great division to watch in 2009.
