NFL Teams Tight with the BooksNFL players association executive director, DeMaurice Smith, has been touring the league as a part of a plan to visit with NFL players and reach and eventually come to an agreement this coming year by opening labor talks team by team.

Unless a new labor agreement is met it would mean no salary cap for NFL owners in 2010 leaving teams to spend as much or little as they want or even a player lockout. Also included in the negotiations is the idea of expanding the current 16 game schedule to include 2 of the already included pre-season games. Currently players receive 60 percent of a given teams’ gross revenues, which team owners feel is too much.

With his most recent stop Smith met with the Tennesee Titan players stating, “You will have an unwavering commitment on behalf of these players to get to the business of trying to make sure that football is going to be played. The fans will not have to worry one single day about whether the players are going to work tirelessly to make sure they get a deal sooner rather than later.”

Ready to go to work in the name of the league’s best interest Smith looks ahead positively, “The players want to play and the fans want to play … I’m optimistic because our fans love our game. They dig our game, so I’m absolutely confident”, but he may be demanding more then teams are willing to give in order to achieve his goals and asking for answers to questions NFL teams may in fact want to keep private.

“How much does a team make? We’ve learned a couple of lessons throughout the financial downturn, and probably the biggest lesson America now knows is there is never a day where you have too much financial transparency.”
