Stealing the Monday Night Spotlight

2008 campaigningWith the undeniable importance of this years presidential race both Barack Obama and John McCain have been doing their best to gain the trust of this nations voters. With that being said what better way to capture the spotlight then utilizing the viewer base of Monday Night Football.

So on the eve of this years election both presidential candidates were asked to comment on the one thing they would change in sports – not that we need the government involved in more of our decisions.

“I think it is about time that we had playoffs in college football. I’m fed up with these computer rankings and this and that and the other,” Obama said. “Get eight teams—the top eight teams right at the end. You got a playoff. Decide on a National Champion.”

Barack seems an avid college sports fan as his answer brought a very understandable point to an otherwise confusing system called the BCS or Bowl Championship Series system that bases team rankings by a computer algorithm. Perhaps with the implementation of this  notable change the NCAA will attribute his involvement by naming the College national championship game, the Obama Bowl. During the inaugural ceremony fans of both champoinshop teams would adorn Obama custom college jerseys.

McCain on the other hand seemed to have a more objective or politically based answer stating that he would “take significant action to prevent the spread and use of performance-enhancing substances. I think it’s a game we’re going to be in for a long time. What I mean by that is there is somebody in a laboratory right now trying to develop some type of substance that can’t be detected and we’ve got to stay ahead of it. It’s not good for the athletes. It’s not good for the sports. It’s very bad for those who don’t do it, and I think it can attack the very integrity of all sports going all the way down to high school.”

Although not a change per say performance-enhancing substances has been a highly touched upon topic in the world of sports, however I was slightly disappointing at this answer as it did not seem like the first thing that would come to mind from a genuine sports fan.
