The Big Unit Breaks through 300

Thursday evening, June, 4th 2009, marked a celebration that most likely will not come again for some time, with just the 24th pitcher in MLB history to win 300 games. Not since 1986 when the Angels’ Don Sutton, had a pitcher surpassed 300 wins but the Big Unit, Randy Johnson humbly overcame this milestone in his elustrius career ending with the San Fransisco Giants.

Randy Johnson’s 300th win

“To me, wins have always outweighed strikeouts because strikeouts are something that just kind of happen,”

Randy Johnson’s 300th win, postponed by rain, was carried into the 5th inning a no-hitter. His part in the win against the Washington Nationals ended after 78 pitches and 50 strikes.

“Who knows? At age 45, maybe I hurt my shoulder, the game went the [other] way and I end at 299,” Johnson said. “With everything I’ve gone through, I don’t look beyond [the next game]. I throw my time and effort into that one game because that’s the game that means the most.”

Just 155 strikeouts away from 5,000 Randy Johnson has yet another achievement to look forward to, but with an incredible career already include five Cy Young awards and World series championship in which he was also the MVP there may be little reason for at 45 year old Unit to continue his MLB career as a player.

“Pitching in a game like today, I get more gratification out of that because of the way I’m doing it now and the way I did it 10 years ago. I’m actually going out there and pitching [now].”

Deserving of recognition for his memorable Hall of Fame career.
