The NFL’s Gambling Stance

sports bettingIn the name of opposition to sports betting the NFL’s stance on sports betting is quite clear.

“If sports betting becomes more prevalent through state-promoted schemes, it will inevitably lead those gambling fans to question whether an erroneous officiating call or a dropped pass late in the game resulted from an honest mistake or an intentional act by a corrupt player or referee,” NFL spokesman Joe Browne told the Wall Street Journal.

Yet recently the NFL has been allowing teams to sign licensing deals with state lotteries. The NFL is apparently worried about perception and this supposed regulated format of football betting would be better then the likely illegal opposition. It is however more likely that the NFL is looking at the $8 billion in revenue the league will earn by allowing the teams to sell their logos to state lotteries.

However states looking to legalize sports books outside of Nevada are being met with lawsuits including the lawsuit the NFL filed against Delaware. Yet last month the supreme court determined the Delaware commissioned betting is constitutional. This opened the doors for huge revenue opportunities such as the $1.1 billion wagered on football in Nevada over the past 12 months.

It is a hard stance to take as sports betting almost never equates to a beneficial outcome for betters, yet the NFL and struggling states see this as an opportunity – worth fighting for. However the NFL continues to use its monopoly tactics to extort stadiums solely based on taxpayer money, in which the stadium should in fact be responsible.

“The NFL respects the right of public entities to raise funds by appropriate means. We object, however, when they seek to do so by using our assets without permission or regard for the negative impact on our games”, Brown said.

With drug use and scandals being kept rather cordial compared to the MLB the NFL may in fact have the ability to make some part of a decision in the best interest of football and fans as well as managing the integrity of the game. With that being said it appears that the NFL and its teams look to bank on state lottery promotions yet ban states from being able to generate revenue in its stead.
