MLB Civil Rights GameThis last Saturday marked the first Major League helped Civil Rights Game, between the Cincinnati Reds and the White Sox and centered around baseball’s role in the civil rights movement.

“We’re very proud of this event,” Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig said. “It’s come a long, long way in a short period of time. I’m delighted to be here, particularly with people who deserve the praise and recognition. This has been really a wonderful day. It has really been an honor and a pleasure to be here.”

Also of importance as a part of the weekends events, Cincinnati Reds hosted the ‘Wanna Play’ program designed as a way for MLB to connect with inner-city communities with hopes of symbolizing the social change of civil rights.

“Earlier today, [Reds players] Brandon Phillips and Jerry Hairston Jr. helped us launch a new program called ‘Wanna Play,’ which will enhance our efforts to bring the game of baseball to African-American kids and teens,” Selig said. “As all of you know, we are building academies all over the country, we have the RBI [Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities] program, we have a myriad of things working to increase that participation. So feel very good about where we are. This is another program that, thankfully, has worked well.”

The event also marks the Major League Baseball’s effort to reverse the decline of african-american involvement in baseball by promoting black involvemnt and opportunities in baseball.

Jimmie Lee Solomon, Executive Vice President of Major League Baseball Operations commented on the event, “hope springs eternal, of course.  President Obama does have a lot of very important things he is working on right now, foreign policy, our economy, as you and I both know, but we hold out hope that he possibly will show up, but we have a pretty good relief pitcher in case he doesn’t with Frank Robinson throwing out the first pitch, in case he (Obama) does not make it”, however President Obama’s participation unfortunately did not occur.
