The UFL kicks off this Thursday, Oct. 8th with some big ambitions, set with only four teams – New York, San Francisco, Orlando and Las Vegas and a six-game season.

The up and coming United Football League looks to attract more then just the attention of players despite some players making as little as $35,000, plus incentive bonuses, the UFL player salaries will be higher than that of the NFL.

“The model for us was one where we realize there’s an abundance of talent out there, but player costs come to nearly 70% in the NFL,” says UFL Commissioner, Michael Huyghue. “So we had to make sure to not outspend ourselves with players. The attraction with this league for those players will not be the money but the opportunity.”

The UFL has already brought on veteran coaches to lead its four teams – Ted Cottrell, Jim Fassel, Jim Haslett and Dennis Green and may look to skim from the NFL as it has recently cut its rosters down to 53 players.

Some of the major changes set forth that differ from the NFL’s set of rules include the removal of intentional grounding when the quarterback is being hounded by a would be tackler and possesion is awarded to both teams in an overtime situation as apposed to teh NFL’s sudden death senario.

With ambitious goals and a sure set of things they wanted to do different then the NFL as well as predisessor leagues the UFL and its staff have a confident way about them. “We are not naive enough to think our product is going to steal the thunder of the NFL. We want our fans to be watching the NFL on Sunday. And watching us on Thursday,” says Huyghue.
