U.S. and Cuban College Baseball Players to Face Off

This coming summer, U.S. and Cuban college baseball players will face each other for the first time in 16 years. The five-game series will be played in Havana’s Latino Stadium. The series will be a warm-up to the Haarlem Baseball Week tournament in the Netherlands in July. In return, the Cuban team will play in the U.S. in 2013.

Little League exchanges between the two countries are fairly common. Even professional exchanges have occurred; in 1999 the Baltimore Orioles became the first MLB team to play in Cuba since the revolution. Given how little the U.S. and Cuba agree on, it’s nice to see the love of sport bringing two peoples together. I need to do some research into who is playing for USA Baseball and buy some college baseball jerseys accordingly.

Adrian Gonzalez Signs with Boston

During the off-season, the Boston Red Sox traded with the San Diego Padres for first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Recently, Gonzalez signed a $154 million, seven-year contract with the Red Sox. This is the second-largest deal the Red Sox have ever signed, the first being $160 million for an eight-year contract with Manny Ramirez.

The most expensive deal of all time goes, unsurprisingly, to the New York Yankees who contracted with Alex Rodriguez for $275 million and ten years. Gonzalez is a three-time All-star and two-time Gold Glove winner. His prowess on the field is sure to sell a lot of custom baseball jerseys with his number on the back.

Washington Nationals Opening Day

Opening day for the Washington Nationals is Thursday, March 31. On Monday, the Nationals finalized their Opening Day roster. Four players have been sent to the minor leagues and Alberto Gonzalez, utility infielder, was traded to the Padres in exchange for Erik Davis.

Additionally, three pitchers have been placed on the disabled list. They are: Chien-Ming Wang (shoulder), Elvin Ramirez (shoulder), and Henry Rodriguez (neck). The changes in the roster made room for utility infielder Alex Cora, outfielder Laynce Nix, and pitcher Brian Broderick. My friends and I have our tickets, authentic MLB jerseys, and are ready to cheer on the Nats on Thursday!

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

I love figure skating and swimming, my husband loves football, and my kids love soccer. The one sport we all enjoy watching together is baseball. I think it’s pretty fitting given that the sport is “America’s pastime.”

We do try to make it to a number of MLB games each season, but those tickets can get expensive. Minor league and collegiate baseball games are cheaper to attend, so we usually go to about 20 of those apiece each season. This year for Christmas, I bought my family matching NCAA baseball jerseys that we can wear together this spring.

The Beginning of Baseball Cards

In the period before and just after the American Civil War, baseball became an increasingly popular sport in the United States. In these early days before modern printing techniques, a type of baseball-theme picture card was made. This picture card was called a ‘cabinet card’ or ‘carte de viste.’ A photograph of a baseball player, team or theme was pasted on a cardboard backing. A large version of this card is a cabinet card, because it was meant to be displayed in a cabinet. A miniature version is a carte de viste. These cards sometimes depicted famous players and teams. These cards could also picture amateur, local and youth teams. Some family pictures depict young boys in a baseball theme, such as wearing a youth MLB jerseys or holding a bat and ball. Many cabinet cards depict non-baseball themes.

Unlike modern cards, which were used for commercial purposes, these cards were made to be nothing more than mementoes. While cabinet cards were used into the 20th Century, these early cards are obscure and rare.  Nowadays, you can purchase a baseball card display to proudly showoff your prized possession.

Thinking Positive On the Field

Yogi Berra once said, “A full mind is an empty bat.”  If you’re up at bat, waiting for the pitch, thinking about every mistake you’ve ever made in the game, it makes it difficult, if not impossible, to hit it out of the park. One of the ways that players “get in the zone” is by performing the same ritual before stepping into the batter’s box. Some player touch their MLB jerseys in the same way while others compulsively strap and unstrap their equipment.

In baseball, just like any other sport, your ability to handle a negative outcome is very important. Everyone makes mistakes, and you won’t agree with all the calls that get made. There is always pressure on a ballplayer. It’s important to learn not to carry your failures around with you, because if you can’t relax, you can’t help your team or play at your full potential.

Selecting Your Little League Jerseys

Let’s face it, every little league team would like to be named after a great baseball team like the Philadelphia Phillies or the Chicago White Sox. When selecting a team name and more importantly, team jerseys, parents and coaches should be aware of what their children want. Most sports equipment retailers offer a wide variety of jerseys for little league teams, so be sure to choose the one they want!

Naming a team after a successful MLB team can give little leaguers the drive to succeed—plus you’ll have an excuse to buy some authentic MLB jerseys for yourself. When it comes to little league, as most parents know, it’s all about attitude more than skill or aptitude. Practice makes kids better, but if they’re having fun, it’s much more likely that they’ll be focused on the task at hand.

Baseball Teams Carry on Traditions

In sports like football and basketball, occasions when teams revert to their old uniforms are often somewhat comical. Teams in these leagues seem to change their colors, mascot and geographical location at the drop of the hat, leaving many teams indiscernible when they don their retro duds. When baseball teams whip out their throwback MLB jerseys however, there are far fewer discrepancies.

Many of the teams in MLB have long, storied histories and made few changes to their team’s image throughout the last century. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, but they are just that, the exceptions. And now that teams like the Yankees have gone this long without altering their image, there’s no reason to think they ever will.

Pride of the Yankees

Fans know them as one of the winningest sports franchises in history. Detractors refer to them as the Evil Empire. They are both admired and criticized for using their buying power to land high-demand free agents year in and year out.

The New York Yankees are a sports dynasty unlike any other – a national institution known as much for their success on the field as they are for their unique uniforms.

When new players put on their Yankees jerseys, the sports media will talk at length about the Bronx bombers who came before. Such legendary hitters as Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio and Roger Maris have donned the pinstripes during the pinnacles of their illustrious careers.

The same is true of pitching greats Whitey Ford, Catfish Hunter, and Mariano Rivera.
