U.S. and Cuban College Baseball Players to Face Off

This coming summer, U.S. and Cuban college baseball players will face each other for the first time in 16 years. The five-game series will be played in Havana’s Latino Stadium. The series will be a warm-up to the Haarlem Baseball Week tournament in the Netherlands in July. In return, the Cuban team will play in the U.S. in 2013.

Little League exchanges between the two countries are fairly common. Even professional exchanges have occurred; in 1999 the Baltimore Orioles became the first MLB team to play in Cuba since the revolution. Given how little the U.S. and Cuba agree on, it’s nice to see the love of sport bringing two peoples together. I need to do some research into who is playing for USA Baseball and buy some college baseball jerseys accordingly.

Is Kentucky Vulnerable?

What I love about the NCAA basketball Division I postseason is that anything is possible. In 2010 No. 1 seed Kansas was knocked out in the second round. In the following round No. 1 Syracuse was demolished by Butler. Just last year, Pittsburgh was knocked out in the second round, while Duke at Ohio State saw losses in the Sweet 16.

Despite these upsets, sports commentators are confident that Kentucky will come out on top at the end of the big dance. I think the fans agree too given how many UK college basketball jerseys have been bought up. I, on the other hand, am a bit skeptical. 2010 and 2011 have proven that nothing is a sure thing when it comes to the postseason. A scrappier team may prove hungrier for a national title than Kentucky.

Basketball Seasons Reach Apex

Now that we are in the midst of March Madness, it is hard not to be caught up in the basketball frenzy. And while there are only a few NCAA games left in the season, there is still an ample amount of NBA contests to be decided. As fans inevitably begin to turn their attention from college to the pros, the regular season will be winding down and the postseason will be imminent.

For those who haven’t been watching the NBA closely this year, the upper echelon teams are basically the same as last season-LA, Cleveland, Orlando and Boston. In the postseason, of course, anything is possible and upstarts like Oklahoma City and the Milwaukee have the potential to be dark horses. So during the coming zenith of the basketball year, be sure to show your support by donning basketball watches and other memorabilia such as NCAA Basketball Jerseys.

Bob Knight Headed to College Basketball Hall of Fame

Long-time head coach of the men’s basketball programs at Indiana University and Texas Tech University, Bob Knight will be inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame along with seven others in the 2011 class. Knight is best known for the 31 years he spent coaching at Indiana University where his volatile temper was often on display.

After being dismissed from IU, Knight was hired as the head coach of the Texas Tech University basketball team, where he greatly improved their record. Coach Knight has the most career wins in history at 902 with a .708 winning percentage. Fans of Knight should consider purchasing custom college jerseys with Knight’s name emblazoned across the back. It would be a tremendous show of support for Knight who has battled a lot of controversy, even in his retirement.

The Ever-Changing Basketball Landscape

I have to admit, up until March Madness started my basketball viewing this season had been minimal. Last year I watched at least a game a day, but my hectic work schedule has limited me to only catching the occasional weekend contest. Despite my avid viewership last year, I felt somewhat lost when I watched the tournament this season.

Thanks to the “one and done” mentality that is prevalent amongst the top players of the upper echelon teams, the best talent seems to change on a yearly basis. Of course I recognized the NCAA jerseys of the few anomalies, such as Scheyer at Duke or Harangody at Notre Dame (is it just me, or does it seem like that guy is in his tenth season?). Although some players are undoubtedly ready for the NBA at an early age, I think that the college climate would be improved if players were required to stay longer.

The Honor of Retiring Numbers

OnTheFieldCollegeBasketballJerseysAll teams at the professional and collegiate levels have ways of honoring the great players in their history. For some of the most fabled organizations, however, developing a system to properly memorializing all of their legends can be a complicated endeavor. While this is a problem that any team would love to have, it is a problem nonetheless. For some teams, simply using subjective criteria is satisfactory, but for those teams with dozens of worthy players, a more objective approach is often taken.

One example of this is the North Carolina basketball team. With so many prodigies having hit the hardwood at Chapel Hill, the school has instituted a systematic process for honoring and retiring their college basketball jerseys. Even with the exacting standards of this process, there are still 43 players who have had their jerseys honored and eight that have been retired.
