Securing a College Baseball Scholarship

I recently stumbled upon an article outlining how competitive it is for high school athletes to secure baseball scholarships for college. The article outlined several ways for athletes to stand apart from the crowd to snag coveted scholarship money. Atop the suggestions was having a proven academic record of excellence. If you’re scratching your heads, consider this: a competitive athlete who is also a stellar student is ideal for coaches because there is less worry about that player being benched for academic ineligibility.

Other ways to secure scholarships attached to college baseball jerseys is by creating a multi-media athletic resume. Videos that showcase a player’s talent, newspaper clippings of great performances, and a detailed list of statistics will present a player in the best light. Attendance at baseball summer camps where recruitment is high is a wise move, too. Finally, players shouldn’t be afraid of contacting a coach or athletic department directly and expressing a need for scholarship money; though, players need to be aware that there are NCAA rules athletic departments need to abide by.

The Next Generation of Hurricanes Fans

Two of my younger cousins live near the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. They are both huge fans of football and basketball. Living so close to the university has given them the opportunity to attend many home games. Though they are both years away from college applications, they are both convinced that they want to be Miami Hurricanes.

Even though I am not a Miami fan, I still want to encourage their enthusiasm for college and collegiate sports. This past Christmas, I bought them both customized college jerseys. They’re orange, green, and white, and have my cousins’ last name on the back, as well as the number of their favorite player. They were both so excited for the gift and can’t wait to show off their new swag at next year’s home games.

Are You Ready for Some Football?

I absolutely love the summer season and never want to see it end, so it’s a good thing that the dawn of autumn also brings a bevy of benefits. Not only do I get to send my kids back to school—thank god—but the coming of fall also marks the beginning of football season. When the weather is beautiful during the summertime, I don’t mind that baseball is the only sport to watch. But when it gets dark and gloomy, I need steady diet of football to keep my occupied inside.

It’s during the football season when I really appreciate living on the West Coast. Every Saturday my son and I put on our NCAA football jerseys and dig in for a daylong football extravaganza. We can roll out of bed a 9am and the Big Ten games are already on. Then on Sunday, we only have to wait until 10am for the first morning game, plus the night games are over by 9 so I can get to bed at a reasonable hour.

The Honor of Retiring Numbers

OnTheFieldCollegeBasketballJerseysAll teams at the professional and collegiate levels have ways of honoring the great players in their history. For some of the most fabled organizations, however, developing a system to properly memorializing all of their legends can be a complicated endeavor. While this is a problem that any team would love to have, it is a problem nonetheless. For some teams, simply using subjective criteria is satisfactory, but for those teams with dozens of worthy players, a more objective approach is often taken.

One example of this is the North Carolina basketball team. With so many prodigies having hit the hardwood at Chapel Hill, the school has instituted a systematic process for honoring and retiring their college basketball jerseys. Even with the exacting standards of this process, there are still 43 players who have had their jerseys honored and eight that have been retired.
