Pitchers and Catchers Report

My father-in-law is a huge baseball fan. He’s lived in all five boroughs of New York, so he feels loyalty to the Mets and the Yankees. I’m a Boston fan, having grown up in Connecticut, so I get a kick out of smack-talking him before games. Let me tell you- he can dish it right back!

After his football team, the New York Giants, swept by my beloved New England Patriots, my father-in-law began his countdown to pitchers and catchers report. He hasn’t been able to make it down to Florida for spring training in a number of years, so my husband and I decided to surprise him with tickets and brand new baseball jerseys. He was beyond. I have no idea how we’ll ever top this gift. Oh well!

NCAA vs. University of North Dakota

The use of Native American names and mascots in sports is a contentious subject. Many sports fans and non-sports fans object to the cartoonish portrayal of “Chief Wahoo” of the Cleveland Indians, for example. But what happens when Native Americans support the use of their tribe’s name and imagery?

This is a case that rages on in North Dakota where UND has been known as the Sioux since 1930 and as the Fighting Sioux since the 1960s. The university has the full support of the Spirit Lake Sioux reservation; Spirit Lake and Standing Rock (a neighboring reservation) actually blessed the use of the nickname in a religious ceremony. Now the NCAA has instructed the university to change the mascot and nickname or else UND will not be able to host postseason competitions nor will the university be able to display their mascot or nickname during a postseason game elsewhere. The school estimates that the cost of changing the mascot and nickname amounts to $750,000. I’m sure that number does not include the hundreds of thousands of dollars fans have spent on custom NCAA jerseys and other Sioux fan gear.

Team Spirit

March Madness is almost upon us which means there is a lot of buzz surrounding which teams will and won’t make the NCAA post-season tournament. The Aggies of Texas A&M got off to a great start this season with a 16-1 start before falling to rival Texas on January 19. Three of the next four games for the Aggies didn’t go well, but they still managed to reach number 10 in the Coaches Poll.

Right now, the Aggies are sitting pretty and are expected to get a bid to the tournament. The experts we’ve been looking at are projecting a six to eight seed. One way you can show your enthusiasm and team spirit is by wearing A&M pendants. These glittery crystal and silver pendants add sparkle to any outfit while showing that you have pride in your team and will look great against your NCAA jerseys. Now that will show team spirit!

RIP Cal Baseball

Last September, when California chancellor Robert Birgeneau announced that the 2001 season would be the last for the California baseball team, he made no hint or indication of an optimistic outcome. Despite that the fight to save the baseball program goes on. Alumni, parents, school contributors and local business owners have banded together in an effort to save the ailing baseball program reinvigorate its 108-year long traditions.

Although the interest in the program appeared to have decline in recent years, it seems to be experiencing a bit of a resurgence. Even in the face of this support, however, many college officials insist that saving the program would require saving the other doomed sports programs at the school. Even if the money could be raised independently the school administration claims that it’s still out of the question because it would be unfair to the other programs. If Cal is your favorite team then it may be time to find another program who’s college baseball jerseys go with your current Cal-aligned wardrobe.

Saturdays at the Sports Bar

sports barI graduated from a Big Ten university several years ago and promptly moved across the country to the West Coast. It’s been virtually impossible to watch my alma mater’s football team on a regular basis without paying exorbitant fees for a cable package. Luckily I found a bar downtown that’s owned by a fellow graduate from my old school. The whole place is decorated in college football jerseys, and he’s just as crazy about the game as I am.

It’s been a down year for the Michigan State Spartans; they lost an embarrassing early game to lowly Central Michigan and then fell short in the annual rivalry matchup against Notre Dame. Despite the team’s brutal mediocrity, it’s comforting to have found a kindred spirit out West who has shared many of my college experiences. Besides, there’s always next year.
