Closing Up of Star Closer’s Career

Easily the most successful closer in major league history, New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera may have ended his career on a whisper than a roar.

Rivera, 42, suffered a torn ACL and a torn meniscus during batting practice before the Yankees’ 4-3 loss to the Royals in Kansas City on Thursday.  After shagging down some balls at Kauffman Stadium (which he does regularly for warmups), he fell to the ground crying out in pain, literally in tears.  AT the very least, his injuries mean an end to his 2012 season as he’ll face surgery.  And often, with injuries such as this, it takes more than a year of rehab which would be a lot of commitment for a player who’s already in his 40s.  Following some x-rays that revealed his condition, Rivera wasn’t certain if he ever would play baseball again.

There are many things that New York Yankee fans will boo at, their own team included, and now Tim Tebow has joined that list.

New York Jets’ quarterback Tim Tebow made his first in what is sure to be many New York public appearances.  However, it wasn’t the lovefest that Tebow has grown accustomed to in his few years in the public spotlight.  When put on the jumbo screen at Yankee Stadium, Tebow was booed while watching the game wTim Tebow Gets Booed at Yankees Stadium In NYCith Dwayne Wade.  When Wade was shown putting on the Yankee cap, people cheered.  When Tebow was shown with the same cap, not the same effect.  The message was clear, New York is not impressed with “Tebow Time” or “Tebow-mania”.

“There are a lot of fancy people that come to these games man,” Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher said when asked about noticing the reaction for Tebow. “Welcome to New York, Tim.”

Derek Jeter Causing an Uproar After Being Hit by Pitch

Derek Jeter Causing an Uproar After Being Hit by PitchThe Yankees were off Thursday, which guaranteed two things: First, that the phantom hit-by-pitch involving Derek Jeter from Wednesday night’s game against the Rays would rush to fill the news vacuum. Second, that Jeter would be mobbed by reporters immediately upon setting foot in the Yankees clubhouse Friday.
Both of those came to pass, naturally, and Jeter had the expected — and perfectly reasonable — reaction when besieged Friday in Baltimore.

“It’s comical to me that this is really getting this much attention,” Jeter told reporters.

As for the notion that he somehow cheated by taking first base after it was awarded to him by home plate umpire Lance Barksdale, Jeter wasn’t having it.

“The umpire called it from the get-go,” Jeter said. “It seems like people think I turned around and told him that the ball hit me and please let me go to first base. What am I supposed to do? Say, ‘I’m sorry sir but it didn’t hit me, please let me continue to hit.’ You know what I mean?”

The man has a point, and the umpiring crew has remained curiously free of scrutiny in this controversy. As Jeter went on to point out, in a roundabout way, it’s completely up to them — not the player — to make sure everything is carried out on an aboveboard basis.

“So the next time somebody steals a base and the guy doesn’t tag you and the umpire calls you out do you want the fielder to say, ‘No, sir I didn’t tag him so let’s just keep him here.’ Come on, man. I mean, seriously,” Jeter said. “Or you’re playing football and they call holding and the guy doesn’t hold him, you want him to go to the ref and say, ‘I didn’t hold him, sir, please put the flag back in your pocket.’ Come on, man.”

Derek Jeter Struggling at the Plate

Derek Jeter Struggling at the PlateGreat players get older. That’s an unfortunate fact in the world of sports. And when they do, we are usually quick to leave them for dead. When it comes to Derek Jeter, let it be said that he is far from finished inflicting damage on major league pitching.

But, even with that said, Jeter is showing many signs at the plate that the dynamic player of old is now just a memory. Many of his struggles at the plate here in 2010 are mechanical in nature, but those mechanical issues appear to be stemming from a far more serious problem.

New York Yankees fans and people around baseball have seen Derek Jeter struggle this season like he never has before. For many, it’s likely been difficult to accept, but the fact is that Jeter is, at least for now, not the hitter we’ve come to know. Not only are the results not the same, but the way he approaches his at-bats has changed as well. And, whether it is subconscious or not, he has changed his approach to compensate for raw ability that may no longer be there. Read More >>
