Pitchers and Catchers Report

My father-in-law is a huge baseball fan. He’s lived in all five boroughs of New York, so he feels loyalty to the Mets and the Yankees. I’m a Boston fan, having grown up in Connecticut, so I get a kick out of smack-talking him before games. Let me tell you- he can dish it right back!

After his football team, the New York Giants, swept by my beloved New England Patriots, my father-in-law began his countdown to pitchers and catchers report. He hasn’t been able to make it down to Florida for spring training in a number of years, so my husband and I decided to surprise him with tickets and brand new baseball jerseys. He was beyond. I have no idea how we’ll ever top this gift. Oh well!

Don’t Open Our Hampers Unless You’re Prepared

If you have sons who play sports you probably know just how stinky their clothing can get. My sons have been known to stink up the whole house with their sweat-soaked jerseys and dirty socks. This is a real problem for me because I am very sensitive to bad smells.

I have tried many different techniques to get rid of the smell. Laundry hampers are the only solution that has actually worked. I make sure the boys put all their dirty clothes in the hampers as soon as they get home from practice. The smell is still there, it’s just trapped in the hamper! Their custom mlb jerseys are not odorific by any means.

Respect for Cal Ripken Jr.

As a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan hailing from Connecticut, I was not impressed by the Baltimore Orioles when I first moved to Maryland in 2000. By this point in history the Orioles had begun their descent. Still, it was hard not to get caught up in the hubbub surrounding Cal Ripken Jr.’s final season.

My mom, always one for sentimental stories, bought the whole family throwback MLB jerseys emblazoned with Ripken’s number 8 and took us to several Orioles games during Ripken’s final season. I’ll admit that I did get caught up in the enthusiasm of the crowd whenever Ripken walked onto the field. (If I’m remembering correctly, as the season progressed, it wasn’t always announced which games Ripken would be playing in, so when he did play it was an even bigger event). When a man has as much integrity, dedication, and ability as Ripken, it’s hard not to become a fan – at least of the player himself.

Washington Nationals Opening Day

Opening day for the Washington Nationals is Thursday, March 31. On Monday, the Nationals finalized their Opening Day roster. Four players have been sent to the minor leagues and Alberto Gonzalez, utility infielder, was traded to the Padres in exchange for Erik Davis.

Additionally, three pitchers have been placed on the disabled list. They are: Chien-Ming Wang (shoulder), Elvin Ramirez (shoulder), and Henry Rodriguez (neck). The changes in the roster made room for utility infielder Alex Cora, outfielder Laynce Nix, and pitcher Brian Broderick. My friends and I have our tickets, authentic MLB jerseys, and are ready to cheer on the Nats on Thursday!

Boston Invades Washington D.C.

A couple years ago the Boston Red Sox played a preseason series against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park in Southeast D.C. My family moved from Connecticut to Washington D.C. in the early 2000s, so we were excited to see our favorite baseball team play so close to home. Buying tickets to see the Red Sox play at Fenway is ridiculously difficult because every home game since May 2003 has been sold out- an MLB record. Red Sox fans are diehard and travel like no other team’s fan base, so my family was expecting a big crowd of local expatriates from New England, as well as a significant crowd from Boston.

What we were met with made our jaws drop. The entire park was filled with Red Sox fans decked out in replica MLB jerseys, Boston caps, and championship t-shirts and jackets. It was hard to find a Nats fan in the sea of Boston fans (although there was one Yankees fan present, who was promptly booed and eventually thrown out for purposefully trying to provoke a fight). Each night of the series broke a new attendance record at Nationals Park. I’m sure having so many Boston fans annoyed the heck out of the home team fans, but my family loved the instant camaraderie with our fellow current and former New Englanders.

The Beginning of Baseball Cards

In the period before and just after the American Civil War, baseball became an increasingly popular sport in the United States. In these early days before modern printing techniques, a type of baseball-theme picture card was made. This picture card was called a ‘cabinet card’ or ‘carte de viste.’ A photograph of a baseball player, team or theme was pasted on a cardboard backing. A large version of this card is a cabinet card, because it was meant to be displayed in a cabinet. A miniature version is a carte de viste. These cards sometimes depicted famous players and teams. These cards could also picture amateur, local and youth teams. Some family pictures depict young boys in a baseball theme, such as wearing a youth MLB jerseys or holding a bat and ball. Many cabinet cards depict non-baseball themes.

Unlike modern cards, which were used for commercial purposes, these cards were made to be nothing more than mementoes. While cabinet cards were used into the 20th Century, these early cards are obscure and rare.  Nowadays, you can purchase a baseball card display to proudly showoff your prized possession.

Selecting Your Little League Jerseys

Let’s face it, every little league team would like to be named after a great baseball team like the Philadelphia Phillies or the Chicago White Sox. When selecting a team name and more importantly, team jerseys, parents and coaches should be aware of what their children want. Most sports equipment retailers offer a wide variety of jerseys for little league teams, so be sure to choose the one they want!

Naming a team after a successful MLB team can give little leaguers the drive to succeed—plus you’ll have an excuse to buy some authentic MLB jerseys for yourself. When it comes to little league, as most parents know, it’s all about attitude more than skill or aptitude. Practice makes kids better, but if they’re having fun, it’s much more likely that they’ll be focused on the task at hand.

Wheeling and Dealing

It seems like baseball players change teams at the drop of a hat. As an avid Mariners fan, I was ecstatic when we signed Cliff Lee in the offseason and immediately went out to have custom baseball jerseys made for my son and myself. But it’s no secret that the M’s are struggling this year, and we’ve already dealt the ace, who was one of the bright spots on the team.

This is the standard procedure in the MLB, as losing teams look to dump salary in the middle of the season and contenders look to beef up their rosters for a deep run in the playoffs. I realize each organization is trying to do the best thing at the moment, but at some point you have to create an identity for your team. Sure, the Mariners have Ichiro, but there has been a revolving door of supporting cast members for years, and this issue isn’t exclusive to Seattle. Personally, I would like to see players stay in a city for a few years, but with free agency, that’s just a dream.

Rays Emerge as Early Season Favorites

Despite being in the toughest division in baseball, the Rays have still managed to maintain the best record in the MLB. It is difficult to pinpoint a particular reason for the team’s success; they have a well-balanced squad, featuring one of the best pitching staffs in the league as well as a prolific offense. This combination has garnered them the best run differential in the Bigs and has them primed for a deep run in the playoffs.

At the end of May, the Rays lineup boasted six hitters with an average above .290. And their rotation has four pitchers with four or more wins. With the exception of Evan Longoria, who certainly drives sales of Rays jerseys, there are few bona fide superstars in the lineup. That fact doesn’t seem to be hampering them at all, and if they continue to get production up and down their lineup and rotation, they will certainly be the team to beat come October.

America’s Pastime?

Baseball is still technically America’s Pastime, that moniker is more for self-promotion than a reflection of sports fans・loyalties. The lack of a salary cap and lucrative deals that are ubiquitous in professional baseball may be emblematic of the American way, but fans have become increasingly disenchanted with the sport. Whether it is due to rampant steroid use, a lack of parity or any other myriad factors, it is evident that baseball has lost much of its appeal.

A few weeks ago, all-star Ryan Howard inked a five-year, $125 million deal, and there was hardly any media coverage. This is undoubtedly partly due to the signing correlating with the NFL Draft, but a contract of this magnitude should have fans around the country donning their Phillies jerseys. Enthusiasm for the sport will certainly pickup as the season progresses, but right now you would be hard-pressed to find widespread interest anywhere around the country.
