College Football is Over… Now What?
During the evening commute home I like to tune into a talk radio station. The show’s hosts talk about a variety of subjects, but they always have at least one segment dedicated to sports. The other night they were talking about the conclusion of the college football season and the soon to be conclusion of professional football season.
What, they wondered, do we do every year when football is over? The end of summer, all of fall, and the beginning of winter is consumed by football, but the spring is wide open. The answer could be one of two things: jump on the baseball band wagon or start researching next football season while ordering new NCAA football jerseys ! I can’t remember which of the two I did last year, but I’m sure it will come back to me soon.
Fashion in Sports
Fashion trends are constantly changing, and this applies to all realms of clothing. We all recognize the fleeting fashions of popular clothing, but the tides of popularity in athletic garb ebb and flow just as regularly. In some sports it’s obvious to see the change of clothing, such as the demise of tiny tanks and short shorts in basketball. With other sports, however, the changes are more subtle.
Take football for instance. During the 90s, were all the rage, while now this style has been reserved for practice uniforms and youth football jerseys . At the most competitive levels, college football jerseys are now made to be skin-tight, prohibiting opponents from getting an unfair advantage by grabbing. While the changes in sports fashion are often for practicality as much as style, there are constant changes nevertheless.
The Long Road to the Heisman
Each year college football is brimming with elite athletes with aspirations of winning the Heisman trophy. Fans go out and buy their custom NCAA jerseys in droves and the player’s schools will often spend exorbitant amounts of money to win over the Heisman voters. Of course, by this time each year some of those preseason hopefuls are entirely out of contention while others have emerged as frontrunners for the honor.
Mark Ingram, the reigning Heisman winner, had to sit out the first two weeks of the season due to a knee injury. Despite the fact that Alabama won these contests with ease, many analysts think that those two games of lost stats could cost him in the voting at the end of the year. But when it comes to the Heisman, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Performances against conference rivals towards the end of the season always seem to carry more clout than the inflated numbers racked up against creampuffs in the fall.
