NCAA vs. University of North Dakota

The use of Native American names and mascots in sports is a contentious subject. Many sports fans and non-sports fans object to the cartoonish portrayal of “Chief Wahoo” of the Cleveland Indians, for example. But what happens when Native Americans support the use of their tribe’s name and imagery?

This is a case that rages on in North Dakota where UND has been known as the Sioux since 1930 and as the Fighting Sioux since the 1960s. The university has the full support of the Spirit Lake Sioux reservation; Spirit Lake and Standing Rock (a neighboring reservation) actually blessed the use of the nickname in a religious ceremony. Now the NCAA has instructed the university to change the mascot and nickname or else UND will not be able to host postseason competitions nor will the university be able to display their mascot or nickname during a postseason game elsewhere. The school estimates that the cost of changing the mascot and nickname amounts to $750,000. I’m sure that number does not include the hundreds of thousands of dollars fans have spent on custom NCAA jerseys and other Sioux fan gear.

Football is Upon Us

February to September, each year without football to watch is really difficult. During the season, it’s college football from dawn to dusk followed by a full slate of pro games on Sundays. So during the offseason, it’s like I have an extra two days added to my week, but there’s nothing that can effectively fill the void besides football.

About the time preseason rolls around I’m chomping at the bit, donning my team’s NCAA football watches and replica NCAA football jerseys practically everyday. Luckily there’s a lot of work to be done in preparation for the season: finalizing my fantasy draft board, analyzing training camps and scouting college players. The new Madden will be here soon, so hopefully that will be able to quench my thirst.

Pragmatic Fabric

It may not be as popular as cotton or as classy as silk but mesh is an ultra useful fabric. This netlike, woven material comes in several varieties, making it truly versatile and suitable for clothing, luggage, outdoor gear, and scores of other things.

Of course, the mesh fabric used to line jackets is not the same as the ones used for mosquito nets.  Sport or nylon mesh is the type that is perfect for clothing particularly windbreakers, personalized ncaa jerseys and shorts. It is available in black, white, red, and varied shades of blue. Power mesh, a medium weight mesh with four-way stretch, is used on bathing suits and stirrups.  The stiffer polyester dive mesh and medium poly mesh are best for bags, a reflective safety vest, and storage compartments.  Mosquito nets need a very finely woven, pure polyester kind of mesh to deny entry to even the most miniscule of insects. There are also other types of mesh that can be relied on for bag straps, venting and pockets, outdoor furniture, window screens, screen doors, and umbrellas.

Fashion in Sports

Fashion trends are constantly changing, and this applies to all realms of clothing. We all recognize the fleeting fashions of popular clothing, but the tides of popularity in athletic garb ebb and flow just as regularly. In some sports it’s obvious to see the change of clothing, such as the demise of tiny tanks and short shorts in basketball. With other sports, however, the changes are more subtle.

Take football for instance. During the 90s, were all the rage, while now this style has been reserved for practice uniforms and youth football jerseys . At the most competitive levels, college football jerseys are now made to be skin-tight, prohibiting opponents from getting an unfair advantage by grabbing. While the changes in sports fashion are often for practicality as much as style, there are constant changes nevertheless.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

I love figure skating and swimming, my husband loves football, and my kids love soccer. The one sport we all enjoy watching together is baseball. I think it’s pretty fitting given that the sport is “America’s pastime.”

We do try to make it to a number of MLB games each season, but those tickets can get expensive. Minor league and collegiate baseball games are cheaper to attend, so we usually go to about 20 of those apiece each season. This year for Christmas, I bought my family matching NCAA baseball jerseys that we can wear together this spring.

Why Does College Baseball Lack Popularity?

When the College World Series airs on ESPN every year, I’m always a little surprised. I know that it’s baseball season and all, but the World Series is the first time many sports fans ever realize the college baseball season is taking place. This is in stark contrast to the college football and basketball seasons, which are eagerly anticipated and receive a glut of media coverage, even in the offseason.

It’s difficult to tell whether the lack of media coverage is the cause or effect of this disparity, but my personal hypothesis is that the MLB farm system is the reason why we don’t see fans around the country donning NCAA baseball jerseys in the spring and summer. With an extensive network of minor league teams and a draft with over 20 rounds, much of the best talent is snatched up right out of high school, meaning the level of play at the college level suffers. The NFL and NBA lack this type of system for grooming recruits, so athletics at the college level serve to fill the void for these organizations.
